Max is changing its name again, back to ‘HBO Max’

You can’t make this stuff up. Max, the streaming service that’s had a rich and confusing history of rebrands, is now making yet another change. Max is being renamed back to ‘HBO Max’ once again.

HBO Max is the new, old name for streaming service

Warner Bros. Discovery announced today that the ‘Max’ name for its streaming service is going away.

What new and improved name will replace it? The same name that it replaced two years ago.

Starting this summer, Max will be rebranded back to ‘HBO Max.’

Per CNBC:

“The powerful growth we have seen in our global streaming service is built around the quality of our programming,” said David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, in a statement. “Today, we are bringing back HBO, the brand that represents the highest quality in media, to further accelerate that growth in the years ahead.”

Presumably, the recent shift to using HBO-style colors for the Max logo will stick around when the HBO Max name is revived.

They can change the name as many times as they want if it keeps them busy from changing the prices 😂

But considering the history of rebranding, that’s not a safe bet at all.

In other naming news, yesterday Disney announced that its new flagship ESPN streaming service would be called simply ‘ESPN.’

It seems the universe thought that choice exhibited far too much common sense, and so to restore balance, Max needed to change back to HBO Max and throw the streaming world into chaos once again.

What do you think of the shift back to HBO Max naming? Let us know in the comments.
