Thicker, heavier iPhone 17 Pro Max revealed in new hands-on video

Apple’s iPhone 17 lineup will be announced this fall, and a new hands-on video just provided a great look at the thicker, heavier iPhone 17 Pro Max model that’s coming.

iPhone 17 Pro Max gets thicker in Ultra-style approach

When Apple debuts its newest flagship iPhones in September, much of the focus will be on the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air.

The 17 Air will replace the Plus model in Apple’s lineup.

It will also easily become the thinnest iPhone ever made, measuring just 5.6mm thin.

But even as the 17 Air goes ultra-thin, Apple is swinging hard the opposite direction with another model.

iPhone 17 Pro Max is getting even thicker and heavier than its predecessor.

Here’s a breakdown of the differences:

  • iPhone 16 Pro Max: 8.25mm thick
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max: 8.725mm thick

And again, for comparison, the sibling iPhone 17 Air will be only 5.6mm thick.

Today a new video posted to X by Majin Bu provides a great look at a dummy model based on the 17 Pro Max’s leaked dimensions.

The short, 33 second video shows glimpses of the thicker Pro Max model from various angles.

When rumors first emerged about the 17 Pro Max getting thicker to pack more battery, I took it as a signal that there might be an Ultra rebrand coming.

I’ve grown less confident in the idea that this model might be branded iPhone 17 Ultra. But if Apple was going to bring an Ultra model to the iPhone line, this looks like a good fit.

Leaning into the bulkier, more rugged look is exactly what Apple Watch Ultra does so well.
