Severance season 3 is coming: Here’s everything we know right now

Severance’s season 2 finale left viewers reeling when it aired earlier this year, leading to a lot of questions about what’s coming for Mark S. and company in season 3. Here’s everything we know so far about Severance season 3 and when to expect its Apple TV premiere.

Severance season 3 officially greenlit by Apple

Severance season 2

Severance is the biggest hit Apple TV has ever had—even surpassing Ted Lasso in popularity.

So it should come as no surprise that Apple has officially renewed the show for another season.

Severance season 3’s greenlight was announced right on the heels of the season 2 finale’s release.

Fortunately, the creative team behind the show didn’t wait for Apple’s official approval before getting to work on the new season, with writing beginning even before the season 3 pickup.

Writers are working on Severance season 3 now, including a key addition

In February during a sit down with The Hollywood Reporter, Ben Stiller shared that Severance season 3 was “underway” and a writers room was actively working on the show in LA.

Speaking of the show’s writers, last spring Puck reported that Severance’s creative team had undergone a big shake-up.

Due to reported conflicts between creator Dan Erickson and writer-producer Mark Friedman during Severance’s first two seasons, Ben Stiller recruited a key new hire.

Matt Belloni wrote at Puck:

Stiller interviewed several writer-producers to come in and beat out a third season before the likely WGA strike, and ended up quietly hiring Beau Willimon, the House of Cards creator who most recently worked on Disney+’s fantastic Andor…Willimon got a rich deal to come in for Season 3, but he quickly saw that help was needed on Season 2, with episode costs ballooning to the $20 million range. So for a few months now, Willimon has helped craft a back half of Season 2 and a template for Season 3, with the show being delayed significantly in the process.

It sounds like, while Willimon made some significant season 2 contributions, it’s the upcoming season 3 where we’ll see more of his influence play out.

Ben Stiller won’t be directing this time

Ben Stiller is a major creative force behind Severance, and that will continue for season 3.

But one key role he’s historically filled is changing.

In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Stiller said he won’t be directing any episodes in Severance season 3. The reason? A film project will take up too much of his time.

Stiller directed 11 episodes in Severance’s first two seasons—over half of the total episode count. So his absence from the director’s chair could make a big difference.

Shooting expected to begin spring 2026

In a recent interview, Patricia Arquette revealed the expected filming start for Severance season 3.

Per Arquette, season 3 production will begin in spring 2026.

For a little context, Severance season 2 kicked off production in October 2022 yet didn’t premiere on Apple TV until January 2025.

However, that long delay was largely the result of major Hollywood strikes that abruptly halted production after 7 of 10 episodes had been shot.

When to expect season 3 on Apple TV

Anyone who has followed Severance since its first season knows the wait between seasons was long.

Due to production issues, re-writes, and Hollywood strikes, nearly three years passed between Severance’s first and second seasons.

Ben Stiller says that for season 3 “he hopes not to keep audiences waiting three years this time.”

If the expected spring 2026 production start proves true, we still shouldn’t expect to see the new season premiere in the same year.

Realistically, Severance season 3 will probably hit Apple TV in mid-to-late 2027.

This 2027 return accounts for about one month of production per episode, and another 6-9 months of post-production for the season. These estimates would align with season 2’s timing, assuming no strike-related delays.

Apple TV is available for $12.99 per month and features hit TV shows and movies like Ted LassoSeveranceThe Morning ShowSilo, and Shrinking.
