Rumor: Here are the iPhone 17 Air colors

Rumors about what to expect from the iPhone 17 Air are heating up as we approach the September iPhone event. A new leak today suggests that the iPhone 17 Air will be available in four colors: black, silver, light gold, and light blue.

Meanwhile, a separate rumor sheds more light on which chip the iPhone 17 Air will use …

iPhone 17 Air colors

The rumor comes from Majin Bu, who has accurately shared information about unreleased iPhones in the past. Here’s how the source describes each of the new colors:

  • Black: “A dark and understated tone.”
  • Silver: “A bright and clear color.”
  • Light Gold: “A warm and subtle shade.”
  • Light Blue: “A delicate tone … similar to the Sky Blue on the M4 MacBook Air.”

This is the second time we’ve heard about Apple’s plans for a light blue color for the iPhone 17 Air. A leak earlier this week described it as a “very light” color that “is easy to confuse with white” in certain lighting conditions.

iPhone 17 Air performance

One long-running question has been whether the iPhone 17 Air will feature the A19 or A19 Pro chip. Analysts Jeff Pu and Ming-Chi Kuo have both reported the device will feature the A19, with Apple saving the A19 Pro chip for the higher-end iPhone 17 models.

A rumor this week from Fixed Focus Digital on Weibo, however, suggests the iPhone 17 Air will feature a variant of the A19 Pro chip. The source says the iPhone 17 Air will use an A19 Pro chip with a 5-core GPU, while the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will use an A19 Pro chip with a 6-core GPU.

Apple has routinely differentiated chips by GPU core count in recent years, using a process referred to as “chip binning,” so this rumor doesn’t come as a total surprise. Additionally, most iPhone 17 Air users are unlikely to experience any notable performance differences between a 5-core GPU and a 6-core GPU. The iPhone 17 Air is also expected to be cheaper than the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, so it makes sense for Apple to find places to balance cost and performance.
