X CEO Linda Yaccarino is now X’s ex-CEO

Linda Yaccarino has announced that she’s stepping down as CEO of X, a little over two years after being tapped by Elon Musk to lead the platform formerly known as Twitter. Here’s what she had to say.

‘Two incredible years’

In a post on X earlier today, Yaccarino reflected on her time at the company, thanking users, business partners, and the team for what she described as “two incredible years” at the helm:

Her resignation comes just three months after Musk’s AI company, xAI, formally acquired X in a $33 billion all-stock transaction. With X now part of a broader AI-focused organization, it’s possible that xAI’s leadership had different plans for the next phase of the company.

And while it’s also worth noting that today’s news comes on the heels of a fresh controversy involving Grok, xAI’s chatbot, and a new set of toxic outbursts, The New York Times reports that the two events weren’t related:

“Ms. Yaccarino had discussed her plans to leave with X employees earlier this week, before the incident with Grok, three people familiar with the matter said. X and xAI are largely separate, but Grok’s responses are often widely cited — and criticized — across the platform.”

As of now, there’s no word on who will replace Yaccarino as CEO, and she hasn’t said what she plans to do next. The reasons behind her departure also remain unclear, but at least some of that is bound to surface in the next few days.
