How long until Severance season 3? Apple TV+ exec gives update

Emmy nominations arrived yesterday, and Apple TV+ had it biggest year ever. Leading the pack was Severance, which scored the most nominations of any show, from any streamer. On the heels of the announcement, Apple TV+ programming head Matt Cherniss gave an update to Variety on the progress of Severance season 3’s development.

Severance season 3 is moving toward setting a production start date

Michael Schneider writes at Variety:

Asked whether Season 3 was on track, Cherniss said…“I know they’re going as quickly as they can. When you have the success that a show like ‘Severance’ has, you want to make sure you deliver on every level when the show comes back, and that takes some time. But they’re on it”…

Does that mean another three-year delay? “No one wants it to be another three year gap… I don’t believe that we have a production start date yet, but we’re moving in that direction,” he said.

Like any good Apple executive, much of the quote involves saying things without actually sharing much new.

However, there is a key piece of information revealed in the second paragraph.

We now know that Severance doesn’t yet have a production start date, but is seemingly not far off from hitting that milestone.

If setting a production date wasn’t anywhere on the radar for Severance, Cherniss likely wouldn’t have mentioned it at all. Instead, he would just highlight how the writers are hard at work, etc.

But the mention of moving toward a production start date means work on the new season likely is moving ahead well.

That said, we’re still probably looking at a late 2026 premiere date at the earliest, with 2027 more likely.

Ben Stiller has previously indicated that a three-year gap between seasons shouldn’t happen again, so it’s good to see Cherniss reiterate that.

Though the creative team should certainly take all the time it needs to make Severance season 3 hit the high quality bar of the first two seasons, Apple no doubt would love to air the new season sooner rather than later.

Apple TV+ is available for $9.99 per month and features hit TV shows and movies like Ted LassoSeveranceThe Morning ShowSilo, and Shrinking.
