Sonos Roam speakers are overheating and partially melting, company admits

Complaints on Reddit shared over the past week have exposed a problem with Sonos’ first-gen Roam speakers overheating and partially melting, which the company just acknowledged while downplaying the number of known cases.

Reports of overheating Sonos Roam speakers acknowledged

Chris Welch writes at Bloomberg:

Sonos Inc. acknowledged a “very low” number of complaints from customers who claim the audio brand’s first-generation Roam speaker has overheated and partially melted near the USB-C port.

The company has “closely tracked” these reports, a spokesperson said Tuesday. It has not issued a formal consumer recall for the product.

As the full article explains, last week a Sonos Roam owner shared a concerning post on Reddit. Its title: “My Sonos roam set itself on fire.”

This prompted another user to share a similar occurrence they recently experienced.

Sonos gave the following statement to Bloomberg:

”We’ve closely tracked a limited number of reports involving the USB-C charging connection on some first-generation Sonos Roam speakers,” a Sonos spokesperson told Bloomberg in an emailed statement. “While the overall incidence rate is very low, and environmental conditions appear to play a role, we’ve taken several proactive steps to even further reduce the likelihood of this issue, including software updates and hardware improvements.”

It’s unclear exactly what those software and hardware improvements are.

Welch notes, for example, that while first-gen Roams seem to be the main problem, there may be some instances of the newer 2024 model being affected too.

If you own a Sonos Roam, especially the first-gen, you probably want to make sure it stays in a cool enough environment to prevent overheating.
