OpenAI teases GPT-5 release for ChatGPT

OpenAI is having a big week. Yesterday, the leading AI firm dropped not one, but two open-weight models, including one that can run well on Apple silicon Macs. Next? GPT-5 is coming to ChatGPT.

OpenAI’s teaser comes in the form of an X post that simply reads “LIVE5TREAM THURSDAY 10AM PT.”

You’ll notice that the ‘S’ in LIVESTREAM has been replaced with a 5, removing all doubt about what the next OpenAI livestream will be about.

ChatGPT took the world by storm in November 2022 when it launched with GPT-3.5. A few months later, OpenAI replaced it with GPT-4 in March 2023.

Since then, OpenAI has released a lot of new models, including GPT-4o, GPT-4.5, GPT-4.1 (which came after 4.5), and o4-mini. However, nothing has been worthy of the GPT-5 upgrade title.

It looks like that will change tomorrow when OpenAI shares details about what exactly GPT-5 can do. Stay tuned for news on Thursday at 10 am PT/1 pm ET.

Earlier this year, OpenAI’s Sam Altman previewed some details about how ChatGPT will work once GPT-5 arrives. A few things include showing chain-of-thought to reveal what ChatGPT is doing when it’s “thinking”, unifying the o-series model family within the GPT-model family, and generally integrating a lot of features from different models into a single model.

More recently, Altman teased his recent use of ChatGPT running GPT-5 in a casual reply to a social media post about TV show recommendations.

Separately, OpenAI updated how ChatGPT works on Monday in an effort to encourage healthier use (and avoid problematic headlines).

OpenAI offers ChatGPT on the Mac, iPhone and iPad, and web. ChatGPT is also integrated into Siri when used with Apple Intelligence.
