Uber considers insurance payouts for delays, canceled rides, missed flights, more

Uber is inquiring select Brazilian customers on a series of new services, including multiple forms of insurance. Here are the details.

Insurance may cover delays and even missed flights

If you’ve ever had to cancel an Uber ride request, you know that you might have incurred a cancellation fee, which Uber says goes to the driver to make up for gas and time spent on the way to pick you up.

But you’ve probably also been in the opposite situation, whether because the driver canceled halfway to picking you up, or because the trip ended up taking much longer than the app originally estimated. Up until now, Uber riders have had no recourse. But that may soon change, at least in select markets.

As reported by Brazilian website Tecnoblog, Uber is exploring a new set of paid insurance options in the country that would compensate riders for delays, canceled trips, missed flights, and even lost personal items.

The company is currently surveying select customers to gauge interest, and hasn’t decided when (or if) the plans will launch.

According to materials seen by the website, the potential offerings include:

  • Compensation for trip delays: a fixed payout if the start of your ride is delayed due to the driver’s fault.
  • Compensation for canceled trips: covers situations where the driver cancels and it causes you to miss or disrupt a commitment.
  • Compensation for missed flights: for airport-bound rides that result in you missing your plane (In Mumbai, a similar missed-flight policy pays the equivalent of about $85).
  • Reimbursement for personal items: covers lost belongings.

If launched in Brazil, Uber’s research suggests the add-on could cost around R$0.20 (or $0.04) per trip, though the company mentions pricing could change. There is no word yet on whether the company may expand this program to the US.

Would you opt-in to ride insurance if Uber launched this program in the US? Let us know in the comments.
