ESPN’s long-awaited flagship streaming services launches this Thursday, August 21, and there’s good news for users of Apple’s TV app.
ESPN streamer will support Apple TV app queue and watchlist
Ahead of US football season getting into full swing, two brand new streaming services are launching this week.
ESPN and FOX One both launch on August 21, closing significant sports availability gaps in streaming.
If you’re like me, whenever a new streaming service launches, it evokes the question: will it support Apple’s TV app?
Apple’s TV app, in addition to being the home for Apple TV+ content, is also an aggregator of other streaming services. But services have to opt in, which isn’t a given.
According to an ESPN rep I spoke with, the new ESPN service will fully integrate with Apple’s TV app and queue.
The new ESPN streamer, which costs $29.99/month, will live inside the existing ESPN app. That app currently integrates with the TV app, and the rep I spoke with confirmed it will continue to do so once the new service launches.
The advantage of connecting third-party streaming apps to Apple’s TV app is that you can have one unified queue containing TV shows and movies from various different services. You can also find content from those other streamers inside the Home tab on tvOS, iOS, and more.
Netflix doesn’t support Apple’s TV app, but most other streaming services do, so it’s good to know ESPN will join that list.
ESPN’s integration should easily make the existing live sports features in Apple’s TV app more useful than ever.
