We first saw Apple Calendar spam almost a decade ago, when it hit such levels that the iPhone maker issued an apology and said that it was blocking suspicious senders.
We’ve seen the problem re-emerge several times since then, with Apple even publishing a YouTube video on how to remove it. Despite all of these efforts, however, it seems to be spiking again …
Spammers send calendar invitations containing links, most of them taking the form of cryptocurrency scams. Several of us at 9to5Mac have received a whole bunch of these in the past few days.
They are particularly problematic because they bypass email filters, and declining them will notify the spammer that your Apple account is active, virtually guaranteeing that you will receive more of them.
Back in 2016, Apple added a Report Junk feature for these on icloud.com, but this is not exactly the most convenient of solutions. The solution the company outlines in its video (below) only works in cases where you have been tricked into subscribing to a calendar: it doesn’t stop spammers sending you generic event invitations.
We’ve reached out to Apple for comment on the latest infestation.
