Will the iPhone Air bend? Here’s what Apple says

Apple’s ultra-thin iPhone Air appears to be earning a lot of buzz, but for some users there’s a very important question still unanswered: will it bend? Here’s what Apple executives said in a new interview.

Apple execs invite interviewers to try bending the iPhone Air

Following Apple’s iPhone 17 and iPhone Air unveiling, Tom’s Guide and Tech Radar teamed up for a new interview with Apple’s John Ternus and Greg Joswiak.

That interview included a very important question: will the iPhone Air bend?

Here was Apple’s answer, and risky next move:

“It exceeds our internal metrics for bend strength,” said Ternus. And just then Joz chimed in and said that they’re “really high.”

To put their money where their mouth is, Joz then tossed the iPhone Air to Lance Ulanoff and he said “Try to bend it. It’s on me.” Both Lance and I tried to bend the heck out of the iPhone Air. It did not break.

“If you put enough load,” says Ternus, “you can get it to flex a little bit.” Joz then chimed in, “but it comes right back. That’s the idea.”

It was bold of Apple’s marketing chief to invite his interviewers to try to bend the iPhone Air.

I’m also encouraged by Apple saying it exceeds the company’s “really high” metrics for bend strength.

It worked better than the ball bearing in the window test of the Cybertruck.

These are of course super fluff and friendly interviews but that seemed like a good move to me. Seems as strong as anyone could reasonably expect it to be.

But the reality is, the durability of the iPhone Air will take some time to truly prove itself.

If users keep it in their back pocket and sit down day after day, for weeks, months, and even years, what will that do to the iPhone Air’s titanium-reinforced frame?

Only time will tell.

Are you worried about the iPhone Air’s durability over time? Or does this interview provide reassurance? Let us know in the comments.
