Apple Wallet is getting US passport support very soon on iPhone

Apple’s Wallet app just got a bunch of new features in iOS 26, but there’s another addition coming very soon: US passport support.

Digital IDs in Wallet will gain US passports by the end of the year

When iOS 26 launched last week to all users, it included almost every new feature that was shown off at WWDC in June.

Unlike past years, when Apple regularly demoed features that didn’t ship until x.1, x.2, or updates that were even farther out, this year was different.

That said, not every single feature made the iOS 26.0 cut.

One prominent MIA feature was US passport support in the Wallet app.

Digital IDs have been a feature inside Apple Wallet for years, but they’ve rolled out very slowly.

That’s because in order to offer a digital ID for a state driver’s license, for example, that state needs to get on board in full partnership with Apple.

Right now, only 11 states and territories offer digital IDs in the US.

But US passport support, when it does arrive, will bring a form of digital ID to a lot more iPhone users.

As spotted by MacRumors, Apple’s website was recently updated to provide a timing update for passports.

Footnote 13 reads:

Digital ID will be coming later this year with US passports only.

That could be a very useful feature if you ever lose your passport, but that's all anyone should treat it as - a backup option in an emergency. You should be very careful handing your phone over to authorities, even if it's locked, and should default to your physical ID / passport if possible.

This likely means that we’re either looking at a release in iOS 26.1 in late October, or iOS 26.2 in early-to-mid December.

It’s also possible that Apple could add US passport support to Wallet via a server-side update, with no software release required.

In any case, soon iPhone users will be able to add their US passport to the Wallet app as a form of digital ID.

Do you plan to add your US passport to Apple’s Wallet app? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments.
