The latest design from Jony Ive’s LoveFrom is a stunning sailing lantern

The latest release from Jony Ive‘s design studio LoveFrom is a stunning sailing lantern, created in partnership with Japanese design and manufacturing company Balmuda.

Jony Ive and LoveFrom

Back in 2019, Jony Ive officially left Apple and formed his own independent design firm, LoveFrom. Since then, most of his former design team has left Apple to join him at LoveFrom. This studio has released a few different products over the years: a Red Nose for Red Nose Day, a seal for the Terra Carta environmental award, and a redesign for Airbnb. It was also recently announced that OpenAI and LoveFrom are working on AI hardware.

LoveFrom’s latest design

The latest offering from LoveFrom is a new Sailing Lantern, which was designed in partnership with, and is being released by, Japanese design and manufacturing company Balmuda. Here’s what Jony Ive had to say about the partnership:

It has been a considerable honour and enormously enjoyable creating our lantern with Gen and his wonderful team at BALMUDA. As a young boy, I adored sailing and spending my time on water. Our lantern was created and built for maritime conditions. While the materials, form and product architecture are new, there is a reassuring familiarity to the nautical lanterns and Fresnel lamps of the past whose designs evolved to address the same unforgiving functional requirements.

Of course, the design is stunning, and honestly quite Apple-esque:

Every time a story like this I have to imagine what his life is like. And I cannot imagine because he clearly lives in a different world.

Never in a thousand years would it occur to me to make a $4200 lantern for a boat.

Edit: Excuse me $4800. With taxes and such let's call it an even $5k easy. And available for preorder only.

The materials are also familiar to any Apple user:

Materials were chosen for integrity and longevity: flawless precision-ground and polished glass, and precision-machined stainless steel with mirror polished, texture-blasted and durable electroplated finishes.

The materials and construction also make it “easy to maintain, disassemble and repair, and [easy to] to recycle at the end of a lifetime of use”.

Final thoughts

LoveFrom and Balmuda’s Sailing Lantern is available as a limited edition of only 1,000 units. If you are interested, you can get it from Balmuda for $4,800 USD. It is expected to ship in March of 2026.
