Do iPhone 16 cases fit the iPhone 17?

Now that the iPhone 17 is widely available, I’ve seen questions from many people about whether their iPhone 16 cases will fit their new phone. The answer to that question is simple: you’re going to need to invest in new cases for your iPhone 17.

iPhone 16 vs iPhone 17 cases

Here are the dimensions of the iPhone 16 lineup:

  • iPhone 16: 147.6 x 71.6 x 7.8 mm
  • iPhone 16 Plus: 160.9 x 77.8 x 7.8 mm
  • iPhone 16 Pro: 149.6 x 71.5 x 8.25 mm
  • iPhone 16 Pro Max: 163 x 77.6 x 8.25 mm

And here are the dimensions of the iPhone 17 lineup this year:

  • iPhone 17:: 149.6 x 71.5 x 7.95 mm
  • iPhone 17 Pro: 150 x 71.9 x 8.75 mm
  • iPhone 17 Pro Max: 163.4 x 78.0 x 8.75 mm

As you can see, there are small but notable changes to every dimension for the new iPhone 17 models. On the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, there’s also the dramatically larger camera plateau on the back of the phones. That change alone is enough to mean all your iPhone 16 cases are useless for the iPhone 17.

This applies to all previous iPhone models, too. For example, if you’re upgrading from an iPhone 15 to an iPhone 17, you’ll also need a new case.

The iPhone Air, meanwhile, is an entirely new form factor for the iPhone so you’ll definitely need a new case if you buy that model.

The good news, however, is that even though the iPhone 17 was just announced, a wide selection of cases is already available for purchase at various price points. Below are some of my favorites, but be sure to check out our full guide for all the options.
