iPhone Fold a step closer as Samsung prepping mass production of displays [U]

Expectations that Apple will launch an iPhone Fold next year got further traction from a claimed Samsung announcement.

Update: Samsung has denied making the comments, calling it a “misunderstanding.” See the update at the end …

2026 iPhone Fold

Everyone now seems aligned on reports that a foldable iPhone will finally be launched next year. This follows the launch of the iPhone Air, which was an important stepping stone toward the far thinner displays needed. Apple was said to have been testing realistic prototypes of the device back in the summer, and iOS 27 is reported to be focusing on features specifically for the new device.

Samsung Display is Apple’s primary partner for iPhone screens, most notably for its most advanced models. The company is naturally expected to be making the display for the upcoming iPhone Fold.

Samsung said to be prepping for mass-production

Korean site ChosunBiz reports on remarks it said were made by the President of Samsung Display, Lee Cheong. While not specifically naming Apple, the implication seemed clear.

The 8.6th-generation organic light-emitting diode (OLED) production line currently in preparation is scheduled to start operations by the end of the second quarter or in the third quarter next year. We are also moving forward with preparations for mass production of OLED for foldable phones to be supplied to a North American client.

But Samsung calls it a ‘misunderstanding’

Samsung has since denied the comments, calling them a misunderstanding.

While there was a question regarding the “US-based customer’s foldable phone,” CEO Yi Chung, did not provide a comment, stating “I cannot disclose specifics regarding clients.” When asked about the status of preparations to secure new clients, he said, “We are preparing well.”
