With Apple’s iPhone 17 and iPhone Air line this year, the company launched more new accessories than usual, including a brand new Crossbody Strap. Based on ongoing availability delays, it sure seems like the Crossbody Strap is an early hit.
Almost a month after going on sale, Apple’s Crossbody Strap is still heavily backordered
Earlier today, I was browsing the online Apple Store with the goal of buying my wife a new iPhone.
When it comes to iPhone upgrades, she’s pretty indifferent about making a change unless there’s truly a compelling reason to. But she and I both felt like the time was right for her to upgrade from the iPhone 14.
After settling on the base iPhone 17 as her new model, we started looking at accessories together.
She was excited about getting a Crossbody Strap because her current iPhone already has a case with a built-in lanyard. And after trying Apple’s first-party offering in an Apple Store, she believed it would be a nice upgrade.
But to my surprise, most colors for the Crossbody Strap are still heavily backordered.
Out of the 10 different Crossbody Strap color options, six weren’t available to ship for over a month.
Estimates for those six colors showed delivery between November 5 and November 12. A seventh color still had multi-week delays into late October. That left just three options online shoppers can get relatively soon.
I then checked in-store pickups, and found a similarly wide array of inconsistent availability. Many colors weren’t in stock at the Apple Store nearest to me.
Apple also sells the Crossbody Strap on Amazon, but I found plenty of shipping delays there too.
Though I’ve yet to see someone wearing a Crossbody Strap out in the world, it’s apparently something lots of iPhone 17 and iPhone Air users are doing.
We don’t know, of course, what Apple’s initial supply of Crossbody Straps was.
But nearly a month after the new accessory first went on sale, its widespread lack of availability sure makes it seem like an early hit.
