A new report today from analyst Jeff Pu has details on what to expect from next year’s highly-anticipated iPhone 18 Fold. According to Pu, Apple will use a combination of titanium and aluminum for the device.
Bloomberg previously described the device as resembling “two titanium iPhone Airs side-by-side.”
In a new to investors seen by 9to5Mac, Pu explained that iPhone 18 Fold’s metal frame will use a hybrid of titanium and aluminum. The analyst doesn’t share any additional details on the design. Ming-Chi Kuo previously reported the iPhone 18 Fold’s hinge will combine stainless steel and titanium, while the casing would exclusively use titanium.
As it stands today, Apple only uses titanium in the iPhone Air. While it was also used in prior iPhone Pro models, Apple switched those devices to aluminum this year to improve things like thermal performance.
Apple’s first foldable iPhone will reportedly pack an 5.5-inch outer display paired with a 7.8-inch inner display. That puts the outer display in the screen size realm of the iPhone mini and the inner display in the ballpark of the iPad mini. According to Kuo, the device will lack support for Face ID and instead offer Touch ID as a form of biometric authentication.

The line of devices launched in September was: iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone Pro, iPhone Pro Max.
So… it could be that next year release will NOT be the iPhone 18 Fold… but just iPhone Fold!
In addition to the hardware itself, the iPhone 18 Fold will also have an impact on Apple’s plans for iOS 27. Bloomberg has reported that iOS 27 will heavily focus on optimizing software for Apple’s first foldable iPhone. This includes new features specifically for the foldable form factor, as well as ensuring that iOS as we know it today is optimized for the new form factor.
Today’s investor note from Pu also reiterates that Apple is seeing stronger than expected demand for the iPhone 17 so far.
