Firefox officially adds Perplexity as a search engine option on the desktop

Following a limited test earlier this year, Mozilla is now adding Perplexity AI as a default search engine option. Here’s how it works.

Perplexity AI becomes Firefox’s newest search engine option

In a new blog post, Mozilla confirmed the broader rollout of Perplexity AI as a search option in Firefox for desktop:

“Now, after positive feedback, we’re making it a fixture, rolling it out to more users for desktop. Perplexity provides conversational answers with citations, so you can validate information without digging through pages of results.”

Expecting some pushback and understandable privacy concerns, Mozilla said that Perplexity “maintains strict prohibitions against selling or sharing personal data,” and noted that users will remain in control of when and whether to use it.

Mozilla also said that while it’s currently available only on desktop, the company is working to bring Perplexity to its mobile browser “in the coming months.”

New features beyond Perplexity integration

In the blog post, Mozilla also highlighted a few other improvements included in the latest Firefox update:

• Profiles support: “To create and switch between different browsing setups.”
• Visual search: “Powered by Google Lens, it lets you search what you see with a simple right-click on any image.”

Specifically about the visual search feature, Mozilla said that “[y]our feedback will guide where visual search appears next, from the address bar to mobile.”
