Threads launches group DMs and expands messaging features to the EU

Following the rollout of one-on-one direct messages on Threads last July, Meta is now adding support for group DMs and expanding the messaging feature (including groups) to users in the EU. Here’s how it works.

Add up to 50 people, as long as you follow them

When Meta finally gave Threads its own direct messaging system, decoupled from Instagram, the company said that it would improve on it, with more message controls, group messaging, and inbox filters.

Since then, Meta has been making good on that promise. It has added media support, as well as more granular privacy settings and controls to curb abusive or unwanted interactions.

Today, the company is rolling out support for group chats, and will begin rolling out the entire messaging product (including individual and group DMs) to users across the European Union.

Group chats support up to 50 participants, but to prevent misuse, you can only add people who already follow you on Threads. Groups can have custom names, and Meta says it’s working on link-based invites to make it easier to bring people in without having to add them manually.

Regarding availability in the EU, Meta said in its blog post:

“Over the next few days, we’ll begin rolling out messaging in the EU. This gives people across the region access to the complete messaging experience, including individual and group chats, messaging controls, privacy settings, the hidden folder, and support for media.”

Meta also said it plans to continue refining Threads messaging in response to user feedback.
