As part of their REFRAME event today, Vimeo has announced support for multiple new 3D video formats on Apple Vision Pro, alongside other new features.
In October of last year, Vimeo released an app for Apple Vision Pro with support for Apple’s Spatial Video format. Today, they are expanding their support for Apple Vision Pro with support for VR180 video. They have also announced plans to support Apple Immersive Video and Apple’s Projected Media Profile by the end of this year.
Here’s a look at how these formats differ and what they mean for Apple Vision Pro users.
VR180
VR180 is one of the most common 3D video formats available. It gives you a wide 180° field of view, usually in stereoscopic 3D. Because only one direction has to be captured compared to 360° video, VR180 is typically easier to produce, so support for this format will likely bring a wealth of VR content to Apple Vision Pro.
Apple Immersive Video
Apple’s preferred format for 3D content on Apple Vision Pro is Immersive Video. These videos are recored in stereoscopic 8K and Spatial Audio. They also use a special projection algorithm that accounts for the specific camera used, resulting in less distortion than VR180’s standard projection algorithm. This is the format Apple has used for all of their original content on Apple Vision Pro, such as the recently released Wild Life episode about orangutans.
Currently, Apple Immersive Video is only available in the Apple TV app outside mainland China, and on the Migu Video and Tencent Video apps inside mainland China. Vimeo’s support will be the first true third-party platform for Apple Immersive Video content.
Apple Projected Media Profile
Apple Projected Media Profile, or APMP, is a new format that was introduced at WWDC25. It supports 180°, 360°, and Wide FOV video. This media profile allows 3D cameras to specify a projection algorithm, camera details, and more, allowing the captured videos to be easily viewable on Apple Vision Pro. Vimeo’s support for APMP will enable “creators to capture in Blackmagic cameras, edit in Final Cut Pro, and distribute directly via Vimeo”.
Other new features
Alongside these new 3D video formats, Vimeo has also announced many other new features today:
- Ask Your Library: advanced AI-powered search of your Vimeo library
- MCP support: connect video libraries directly to AI agents and LLMs
- Vimeo Review: new ways to manage video sharing feedback with your team and clients
- Answer Engine Optimization: automatically generate rich metadata like titles and chapters to improve search and discoverability

Final thoughts
Watching immersive content is Apple Vision Pro‘s greatest strength, and it is great to see companies like Vimeo continuing to support it. I can’t wait to see what new content will be available in these new formats!
