Swift SDK for Android now available

Following the announcement of the Android Workgroup earlier this year, the first preview release of the Swift SDK for Android was just rolled out. Here are the details.

‘This milestone reflects months of effort by the Android workgroup’

In the blog post announcing the news (via MacMagazine), developer Joannis Orlandos explains that today marked the announcement of “nightly preview releases of the Swift SDK for Android”. From the blog post:

“This milestone reflects months of effort by the Android workgroup, building on many years of grassroots community effort. With the SDK, developers can begin developing Android applications in Swift, opening new avenues for cross-platform development and accelerating innovation across the mobile ecosystem.

The Swift SDK for Android is available today, bundled with the Windows installer or downloadable separately for use on Linux or macOS.”

Alongside today’s rollout, the group also released a starter guide, with a comprehensive look and step-by-step instructions on the dependencies, packages, and bundles needed to get started.

There are also multiple sample projects available on GitHub, as well as support materials for developers looking to integrate Swift code into existing Android projects, explore Java interoperability through the swift-java project, and more.

Finally, the group says it is drafting a document that will detail the next steps of the project, and is asking developers “to share your experiences, ideas, tools and apps on the Swift forums.”
