A few days ago, Adobe explained the delay in bringing iPhone 17 compatibility to its Indigo camera app. The app has now been updated to run on the latest phones, although a few limitations remain. Here are the details.
Full support is almost here
With the iPhone 17 lineup, Apple introduced the new Center Stage front camera, a feature that (among other things) automatically switches between portrait and landscape depending on what’s in frame.
The back cameras also got software and hardware upgrades, some of which expand support for professional gear and workflows.
Adobe, in turn, debuted Project Indigo a few months ago, an app that brings full manual control over focus, ISO, shutter speed, white balance (with temperature and tint), and exposure compensation.
The problem is that Adobe ran into a few hurdles while updating Project Indigo to support the new devices, some of which are tied to iOS bugs that Apple is expected to fix with the release of iOS 26.1 in the coming days.
Here’s Adobe a few days ago:
Hello everyone – thank you for your patience while you wait for the iPhone 17 support. We are working hard on it, and we have run into some issues, especially with the front camera. Some of them we flagged to Apple, who have made a fix and will ship it with iOS 26.1. Sadly, that means we need to consider disabling the front camera in Indigo until that version of iOS is shipped. In the meantime, we have made some improvements with iOS 26 compatibility on all devices. We hope to release an updated version which runs on rear iPhone 17-series cameras in a few days.
Now, Adobe has rolled out an update bringing initial compatibility with the iPhone 17 lineup. However, as the release notes point out, some functions are still pending the release of iOS 26.1, and should be released …and will once that update becomes available:
MAJOR UPDATE: iPhone 17-series support is finally here! After some time in the workshop and a lot of grinding, sanding, welding and polishing, Indigo team is happy to announce that your brand new iPhone 17-series device can now run Indigo.
• Front camera support for 17-series devices will be added in the next app version, following iOS 26.1 public release which includes a bug fix needed for front camera operation.
• Users who upgraded to iPhone 17-series immediately might have missed the 1.0.3 app release which included a lot of updates and new features. Please review release notes on the App Store for details.
• We have also included a new questionnaire in the app settings. Answering it will take 5 minutes and will greatly help us determine which directions to take with Indigo to make it a better app for passionate mobile photographers. We hope you will send in your responses and we greatly appreciate your inputs.KNOWN ISSUES (ON IPHONE 17 DEVICES)
Front-facing camera is currently disabled. It will be enabled in the next app release targeting iOS 26.1.
Issues with very noisy captures in Photo mode in low light if ISO is high. We suggest using Night mode to capture such scenes, or lowering ISO to 500 or less.
Auto Exposure may flicker in Photo mode in low-light conditions.
4× telephoto images on 17 Pro and Pro Max devices may exhibit a brighter band toward the bottom of the image.
The update also brings improvements and bug fixes to Project Indigo on other iPhone models, including an improved auto-exposure algorithm on iPhone 13 Pro Max and the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
You can find Project Indigo on the App Store.
