Apple has updated its website to say that Apple Intelligence on a Mac requires a model with an M2 chip or later. That’s a change to the original compatibility requirement of an M1 chip or later.
However, while the change may be worrying for anyone with an M1 Mac, it seems near-certain that this is an error rather than a change of requirements …
A MacRumors reader spotted the update, which has only been made to the US version of the website. All the listings for Macs that previously read “M1 and later” now instead read “M2 and later.”
As the site notes, this is almost certainly an error resulting from somebody being tasked with updating the entry for Vision Pro. This originally just said M2, as that was the only version, but the launch of the M5 model meant it had to be updated to “M2 or later.”
It appears Apple gave this job to an intern as they made the same change to all of the Mac listings.
Checking the UK website, this hasn’t yet been updated at all. Vision Pro is still listed simply as M2, so we will need to see what happens when websites for other countries are updated. However, the smart money is on this being a simple mistake. We’ve reached out to Apple and will update with any response.
