Apple News just lost a major media partner after a decade

Apple News readers will see one less source in the app starting today. A major media partner has pulled its content from Apple’s News app after a decade.

Semafor reports that CNN has ended its partnership with Apple, at least for now.

CNN quietly removed its stories from Apple News over the weekend, ending the cable news brand’s contract to share its content on the popular news app, Semafor has learned. The two companies are continuing to discuss a new deal that would restore CNN’s stories to Apple News.

Since 2015, CNN has been a key Apple News partner, providing hand-crafted “feature stories blending photos, videos and animations to produce immersive, interactive experiences.”

What’s changed now? Aside from leadership changes at the network, CNN recently launched a digital subscription service while introducing a paywall to some online content. CNN’s articles-only plan runs $29.99/year and an All Access version with streaming costs $69.99/year ($41.99 for the first year).

While neither company commented in the Semafor report, it seems possible that CNN has pulled its content as a negotiating tactic while it works with Apple on a new deal.

In the meantime, the paid Apple News+ tier recently added stories from The Washington Post, joining The Wall Street Journal as another major publication that’s unlocked with a News+ subscription.

Apple News is available for free. Apple News+, which unlocks much more content, costs $12.99/month. News+ is also included in Apple One Premiere, a bundle service that includes Apple TV, Apple Music, and more.
