Marques Brownlee launched his first iPhone app last year, but it’s now being sunset. Here are the details on MKBHD’s Panels app getting shut down.

Panels app is shutting down on December 31, refunds being issued

YouTuber Marques Brownlee (also known as MKBHD) launched the Panels app last year as an iPhone wallpaper app, but it immediately stirred up controversy.

The $50/year price point and quality issues led to a rocky start. And now Brownlee has announced that the app will be shut down soon as it was unable to achieve his vision.

Here’s MKBHD’s announcement video:

What happens next for app users is laid out on the Panels website. Here are some key excerpts:

$50 a year for a wallpaper app was DOA. He also never updated the app as promised. Turns out it’s easier to criticize Apple’s products vs. making your own.

What this means for you

  • Panels will be shutting down on December 31, 2025.
  • The wallpapers you’ve downloaded or purchased are yours to keep, forever.
  • You can create your own wallpaper app using our open-source code as a foundation.
  • All user data will be permanently deleted after the shutdown.

Refunds

When the app is removed from the stores, all active subscriptions will be automatically canceled.

After the shutdown on December 31, 2025, we’ll begin proactively refunding all active subscriptions. This ensures you can continue accessing and downloading wallpapers until the shutdown date — no action needed on your part.

There’s also a process laid out for requesting a refund sooner, which you can find on the website.
