iPhone 17 Pro lost key Camera app feature that iPhone 16 Pro had

iPhone 17 Pro offers a much-improved camera experience over prior models like the iPhone 16 Pro. But an Apple support document confirms that one previous Camera app feature has been removed: Night mode photos are no longer available in Portrait mode.

Night mode not available in Portrait mode on iPhone 17 Pro

Every year, Apple upgrades the iPhone’s camera offerings in multiple ways. And that was definitely true this year with the iPhone 17 Pro.

iPhone 17 Pro has a new Center Stage front camera, a trio of 48MP Fusion cameras on the back, and plenty of new software features too like Dual Capture.

But curiously, users have discovered that one software feature is missing: Night mode can no longer be used while shooting in Portrait mode.

Portrait mode is a popular Camera app feature, and if you’re shooting in dark environments, it has long supported Night mode for great low-light portraits.

Per an Apple support doc though, the list of compatible models excludes iPhone 17 Pro:

  • iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max
  • iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max
  • iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max
  • iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max
  • iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max

It’s highly unusual that a camera feature available on every Pro model since 2020 would all of a sudden be dropped from iPhone 17 Pro.

Perhaps if enough users get upset, Apple will be able to bring it back via a future software update. In the meantime though, it’s worth noting that heavy Portrait mode users could get a downgrade when switching to iPhone 17 Pro.
