We’ve so far been assuming that the iPhone Fold would have a familiar aspect ratio on the exterior display, opening out into an interior screen which is taller than it is wide.
However, a recent report suggested that the interior screen will be wider than it is tall, and some physical mockups give us an indication of how this might look …
The renders we’ve been using so far show a conventional iPhone shape when the device is folded, opening into a larger screen essentially amounting to two iPhones side by side.
However, a report suggesting that the internal display would be wider than it is tall. If accurate, this would point to an extremely unusual aspect ratio for the folded device.

The current aspect ratio for non-folding phones has evolved from how the phones fit in our hands. The phones are about as wide and tall as they can be. Any aspect ratios for a folded (or non-folding) phone that’s significantly different from what we have now would ultimately mean a significantly smaller screen, if it’s something that’s going to fit in our hands. So I find these reports concerning.
I’m sure that Apple has put a lot of thought into the ratios for this new device. I hope it’s not too much of a compromise. We’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime I’m kind of envious of the form factor of the Galaxy Trifold Z.
Ben Geskin created some physical mockups to get a sense of what this would be like to handle, with the folded device a similar size and shape to a passport. He includes both photos and a video.
If accurate, this would be a radical departure from existing iPhone screens. I personally find myself somewhat skeptical, but perhaps Apple would want the device to stand out as much as possible and use the aspect ratio as one way of doing so?
