Apple plans to give iPhone an Ultra Retina XDR display: report

We’re about a month away from the unveiling of Apple’s new iPhone 17 lineup. But today, a new report from The Elec shares about a big display upgrade in the works for a future iPhone model.

Tandem OLED from M4 iPad Pro in the plans for future iPhone

Last year when the M4 iPad Pro launched, it came with Apple’s first Ultra Retina XDR display. Apple called it “the world’s most advanced display.”

Now, it seems the tandem OLED tech powering that advancement could be brought to the iPhone next.

The Elec reports that Apple is in discussions with both LG and Samsung about producing tandem OLED displays for a future iPhone.

Deals with Apple’s display partners have not yet been struck, but Apple has reportedly set a two-year timeline for the mass production plan. As a result, the first tandem OLED iPhone isn’t expected to ship before 2028.

What benefit would an Ultra Retina XDR display offer?

Here’s Apple describing the tech in the M4 iPad Pro:

The Ultra Retina XDR display features state-of-the-art tandem OLED technology that uses two OLED panels and combines the light from both to provide phenomenal full-screen brightness. The new iPad Pro supports an incredible 1000 nits of full-screen brightness for SDR and HDR content, and 1600 nits peak for HDR. No other device of its kind delivers this level of extreme dynamic range. Tandem OLED technology enables sub-millisecond control over the color and luminance of each pixel, taking XDR precision further than ever. Specular highlights in photos and video appear even brighter, and there’s more detail in shadows and low light than ever before on iPad — all while delivering even more responsiveness to content in motion.

So there are several primary strengths with this advanced display technology:

  1. Brightness
  2. Color accuracy
  3. Responsiveness

Though current iPhone displays are already solid in all of these areas, tandem OLED would enable Apple to up the game even further.

The iPhone’s screen could be brighter, with more vibrant, detailed colors, and more fluid than ever before.
