Apple TV+ might have its next big blockbuster movie lined up

Apple TV+ has a strong lineup of fall film debuts on the way, but a new report indicates the streamer is about to land one of its biggest movies yet: a new Martin Scorsese film with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence starring.

Martin Scorsese’s next film, What Happens at Night, will star Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio

After years of mixed successes and failures, Apple seems to be finally hitting its stride with original movies.

This fall alone, Apple TV+ has already premiered the Denzel Washington-starring Highest 2 Lowest, it has Matthew McConaughey’s The Lost Bus coming soon, and the streaming debut of F1 The Movie is highly anticipated too.

A new Deadline report indicates Apple is about to land one of its biggest films yet:

Director Martin Scorsese has committed to his next film, and he’s got Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence as his leads. They’re eyeing a January start for an adaptation of the ghost story novel What Happens at Night. Deadline hears that Apple Original Films is negotiating to finance and produce with Studiocanal, which has developed the script.

The novel, What Happens at Night, was written by Peter Cameron. And it seems like a lock to be one of Apple’s few big theatrical movies in the next year or two.

Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Jennifer Lawrence make for a powerful trio. And the more mass-market friendly story, combined with Lawrence’s presence, could lend itself to a much broader audience appeal than Scorsese and DiCaprio’s last Apple film: the excellent Killers of the Flower Moon.

Here’s an overview of the plot for the new film:

The dream-like story follows a married American couple who travel to a small, snowy European town to adopt a baby. They check into a cavernous, largely deserted hotel where they encounter an enigmatic cast of characters including a flamboyant chanteuse, a depraved businessman and a charismatic faith healer. Nothing is quite as it seems in this strange, frozen world. As the couple struggle to claim their baby, the less they seem to know about themselves and the life they’ve built together.

The report notes that Apple’s expected backing makes a lot of sense not only because of the company’s history with Killers, but also because it “has first-look deals with Scorsese’s Sikelia and DiCaprio’s Appian Way banners.”

If shooting does indeed begin in January, then depending on the length and post-production time, the film could be ready for a wide theatrical release in fall 2026—when many award contenders premiere—ahead of its debut on Apple TV+. There’s still plenty unconfirmed though, so we’ll have to wait for official Apple announcements to know more.

Apple TV+ is available for $12.99 per month and features hit TV shows and movies like Ted LassoSeveranceThe Morning ShowSilo, and Shrinking.
