Acclaimed Apple TV show just got new episode despite being canceled

Apple TV debuted the new comedy The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin last year to critical praise, and a quick season 2 renewal. Reporting later indicated, however, that the new season had been canceled. Yet Apple just released a surprise new episode of Dick Turpin with no official announcement.

Apple premieres surprise Dick Turpin episode, but it’s likely the last one

Among recent Apple TV comedy debuts, last year’s The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin was a highlight for the streamer.

But despite securing a season 2 renewal, production troubles quickly emerged behind the scenes.

Earlier this year, The Sun reported that the series’ star, Noel Fielding, had pulled out of the show very abruptly mid-production—possibly due to illness.

It was unclear why the show couldn’t have simply been delayed to a later date. But despite never getting official confirmation from Apple, all reports indicated it had been canceled.

Yet today, with no prior announcement, Apple TV has premiered a brand new episode of the series.

’The Night of the Werebear’ is now available on Apple TV, listed as the seventh episode in season 1. Although episode 6 is still marked as the season finale.

The episode runs 35 minutes and has this description:

Special episode. When a monster terrorizes Hempstead, Dick and the gang set out to capture the beast and restore peace to the village.

Apple seems to be billing it as a Halloween-themed special episode. But if you’re hoping for more Dick Turpin to come, don’t get too excited. This new episode is likely Turpin’s series finale.

I really enjoyed the first season. I was sad to hear about the problems with season 2. I'm glad they were able to salvage something from that mess.

A report from British publication Broadcast says that Apple and the series’ creative team made a deal to cut together footage from the previous season 2 shoots into one final episode.

So while Apple has neither confirmed the season 2 cancellation officially, or even said that this new episode is the series finale, by all appearances today’s release is the last we’ll see of Dick Turpin.
