It’s going to be an exciting two years for iPhone users. A new report from The Information details the eight new iPhones in the works inside Apple, including the highly-anticipated iPhone Fold and iPhone 20.
Apple’s extensive roadmap of new iPhones
First, the report says the iPhone 17e is expected in the spring 2026. This will be an “incremental update” from the iPhone 16e and use Apple’s newest C1X modem. The report says the iPhone 17e “will feature a glass back that supports magnetic wireless charging, one of the features consumers missed most on the iPhone 16e.” The current iPhone 16e supports standard Qi charging, but not magnetic charging.
Second, Apple is working on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max for fall 2026. The report says these phones will feature an under-display Face ID sensor. The front-facing camera will be relocated to the top-left of the display, as previously reported.
The iPhone 18 Pro models will also have a mechanical aperture for at least one camera. “This will allow inclusion of a new camera image sensor that can capture more light at night while preventing washed-out photos during the day,” the report says.
The overall appearance of the iPhone 18 Pro phones “will be similar to that of the iPhone 17 Pro.”
Internally, the phones will use a new chip technology from TSMC that “puts the memory chips closer to the iPhone’s core processor.”
Next, Apple is working on the iPhone Fold set for a release in fall 2026. The iPhone Fold will have an aspect ratio similar to the iPad when unfolded with a 7.7-inch display. When folded, the display will measure 5.3 inches. It will be “more wide than tall when unfolded,” the report says.
“One person involved in the project cautioned that the size of the displays could change,” the report qualifies.
Throughout development and trial production of the iPhone Fold, The Information reports that Apple is “encountering a high level of defects” in the display. This, however, is “to be expected at this stage.” The selfie camera will be located in the upper-left corner of the display alongside light, proximity, and other sensors.
For spring 2027, Apple is prepping the base model iPhone 18. This is described as an “incremental update.” For example, Apple will remove haptic feedback and touch sensing from the Camera Control, as previously reported.
The new iPhone 18e is also set for spring 2027. “We don’t know much about changes to this new budget iPhone model, except that it will have wireless charging as its predecessor did, The Information reports.
The iPhone Air 2 is still in development for spring 2027, the report says. Apple has gone “back to the drawing board and redesigning the iPhone Air because of the first model’s poor sales.” Apple is “considering” adding a second camera and making the iPhone Air 2 cheaper.
Finally, Apple is working on the iPhone 20 for fall 2027. Bloomberg previously reported on Apple’s plans for a bold design for the 20th anniversary iPhone, saying it will “make more extensive use of glass.”
The Information says:
The curved glass enclosure on the front and back and along all four edges will enable a screen without the black frame that typically appears along the edges of smartphone displays. It couldn’t be learned if the display itself will curve around the edges. Instead of a full metal frame, there’s only a narrow metal band running around the midpoint of the device’s edge, where the buttons sit. Apple plans to place the phone’s selfie camera under the display, making it the first iPhone with a full edge-to-edge display and no cutouts.
