F1: The Movie wins Apple its first Academy Award in three years

The 98th Annual Academy Awards were held last night. Apple had six nominations total, and won its first Oscar in three years thanks to F1: The Movie’s ‘Best Sound’ victory.

F1 wins ‘Best Sound,’ the first Oscar for Apple since 2023

F1: The Movie is the highest grossing sports film of all time, Apple’s biggest theatrical success ever, and now it can add ‘Academy Award winner’ to its accolades.

At last night’s Oscars ceremony, F1 took home the prize for ‘Best Sound,’ beating out Frankenstein, One Battle After Another, Sinners, and Sirāt.

Apple entered last night’s Oscars with six nominations total:

These six nominations represented a notable improvement over 2025, when Apple received zero nominations for any of its films.

In 2024, the streamer had a strong showing heading into the ceremony. It scored 13 nominations, headlined by Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. However, Apple came away empty-handed with zero wins.

Before last night, the last time Apple won an Oscar was 2023: The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse won Best Animated Short Film.

And Apple’s biggest Oscar achievement was the year before, when CODA won Best Picture—a first for any streaming service-based film.

The last couple years have brought a revamp of Apple’s film strategy that seems to be paying off. With a solid lineup of new films coming to Apple TV this year, perhaps the streamer can become more of a presence at the Oscars moving forward.

Apple TV is available for $12.99 per month, or you can get it discounted through the Apple One bundle.
