Ford’s Mustang Mach-E is one of very few cars with support for Apple Maps EV Routing in CarPlay. The feature helps you plan EV trips by automatically inserting necessary charging stops along your route.
One limitation of Apple Maps EV Routing, however, is that it doesn’t support battery preconditioning. According to Ford, however, this is changing.
On its website, Ford says that the 2026 model year Mustang Mach-E supports en-route battery preconditioning when using Apple Maps EV Routing:
Your Ford electric vehicle (EV) is equipped with En-Route Preconditioning. Your EV relies on Connected Navigation, Google Maps EV Routing for Android Auto, or Apple Maps EV Routing in CarPlay to know when you are navigating to a direct current (DC) fast charger. Your vehicle will automatically cool or warm its battery to ensure charging performance when you arrive.
Important: En-Route Preconditioning for Apple Maps EV Routing in CarPlay is currently only available on the 2026 model year (MY) Mustang Mach-E.
The company explains that en-route preconditioning is enabled when planning a route that includes a DC fast charging stop using:
- Connected Navigation
- Google Maps EV Routing
- Apple Maps EV Routing
With Ford’s Connected Navigation and Google Maps EV Routing, you can also choose a DC fast charger from the list of nearby chargers and preconditioning will kick in. That aspect of the feature is not supported when using Apple Maps EV Routing.
Battery preconditioning is an important part of EV driving, particularly during roadtrips. If your battery is properly preconditioned, your car can charge faster — especially in colder weather.
As a Mustang Mach-E driver myself, I almost exclusively use Apple Maps EV Routing for my roadtrips. The lack of battery preconditioning is definitely noticeable, so I’m glad to see Ford add this feature.
Unfortunately, my Mach-E is a 2022 model year and this new feature is only supported on 2026 model years. Ford hasn’t shared any additional information on when or if it will come to older models.
There’s also no additional information on whether Ford plans to bring this feature to the F-150 Lightning, which also supports Apple Maps EV Routing in CarPlay.
