Apple TV+ just canceled its longest-running comedy series

Apple TV+ has canceled one of its longest-running shows, and the oldest comedy series in its lineup: Mythic Quest is no more. Here are the details.

Mythic Quest canceled after four seasons at Apple TV+

Mythic Quest is a workplace comedy set in the world of video game production.

It premiered back on February 7, 2020 and recently wrapped up its fourth season on Apple TV+.

The show has long been among Apple’s most well-regarded comedy series, by both critics and viewers.

But it seems the loyal fan base was too small for Apple to keep things running.

Apple TV+ has canceled the series following its four-season run, per Joe Otterson at Variety:

“Endings are hard. But after four incredible seasons, ‘Mythic Quest’ is coming to a close,” said series executive producers Megan Ganz, David Hornsby, and Rob McElhenney. “We’re so proud of the show and the world we got to build—and deeply grateful to every cast and crew member who poured their heart into it. To all our fans, thank you for playing with us. To our partners at Apple, thank you for believing in the vision from the very beginning. Because endings are hard, with Apple’s blessing we made one final update to our last episode—so we could say goodbye, instead of just game over.”

That last tidbit is worth noting: Apple has approved a revision to the season 4 finale which, presumably, will allow the series to have a more fitting end.

Variety notes the updated finale will become available some time this week.

9to5Mac’s Take

To outside observers, Mythic Quest being canceled may come as a surprise.

Besides its lengthy run so far, the show also garnered a recent spin-off series, Side Quest.

While there’s no official reason given for the cancellation, I noticed during Mythic Quest’s season 4 run that the show didn’t perform very well on the Apple TV+ top charts.

I love Mythic Quest and the season 4 felt like a finale to me, wrapping up all the loose ends and completing the character arc.

This would be problematic in any set of circumstances, but it’s especially troubling for one key reason: Mythic Quest was airing at the same time as Severance season 2.

If you can’t succeed at a time when Apple TV+ has more engaged viewers than ever before, you don’t have much of a future on the streamer.

Apple TV+ is currently available for just *$2.99* per month with a limited-time special.
