Facebook, which started as a college-only network, shuts down its new college-only network

Facebook is closing the doors on its Campus feature on March 10. Launched in September 2020, this is its latest defeat in its attempt to appeal to a younger audience. 

Campus is a feature within the app for college students, very much like the original site Mark Zuckerberg created. It offers students a special news feed where they can join groups, events, and chat rooms centered around campus life.

Update: Chipolo has reached out to us with the following statement:

The Find My network protects everyone’s privacy and Apple has spent a great deal of time designing protections against unwanted tracking that discourage bad behavior, even alerting users if an item that is not theirs is following their location. These protections are built into the Find My-enabled Chipolo CARD Spot as a requirement to be part of the program. The recent updates Apple made for Airtag are not yet applied to 3rd party accessories in the Find My network.”

AirTags can be an especially helpful device to help you find lost items. But, after its debut last spring, many people worry the tracking device is an effective stalking tool as well. Apple has put privacy at the forefront of its design and has adapted to improve anti-stalking features amid concerns.

Instagram is making it easier to follow videos without cranking up the audio

Instagram has introduced automatic captions for videos like its rival TikTok did early last year. As reported by engadget, this feature will be enabled by default for creators, so they won’t have to manually add captions themselves. Automatic captions are only in select languages right now, but Instagram plans to expand to more languages and countries soon.

Apple TV+ deal to stream MLB games still on deck, but it might not be exclusive

Reported by the New York Post today, NBC is in talks to stream Major League Baseball games on its streaming service, Peacock. This news comes after last month’s report that an Apple TV+ deal is in the works to stream live MLB games on the service. Neither deal is yet official, but both are expected to come about sometime this year.

College providing MacBooks and iPads to students to create digital equity

13-inch MacBook Pro

Bowdoin College is once again giving students access to some of the latest Apple technology. The College’s Digital Excellence Commitment (DExC) will provide each incoming student with a 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro, an iPad mini, and an Apple Pencil. Students are receiving these devices at either Orientation or when the Fall 2022 semester begins.
