Twitter bans users from linking to other social media platforms like Instagram and Mastodon

Elon Musk Twitter CEO

Update: Elon Musk says the policy will be adjusted to only forbid accounts that are primarily advertising other platforms, and casual linking will once again be permitted.

On Sunday, during the World Cup, Twitter officially banned its users from linking to their profiles on other social media sites like Mastodon, Facebook, and Instagram. Mentions of other platform handles are also now banned.

The policy means Twitter users flocking to Mastodon are no longer allowed to tell their followers to go there instead, for instance. Penalties for breaking the rules include offending tweets being deleted to entire account suspensions.

Gurman: Apple cancels plans for high-end ‘M2 Extreme’ chip, but new Mac Pro will retain expandability options for RAM and storage

Apple Silicon Mac Pro

Apple has apparently scrapped plans to make a new Apple Silicon Mac Pro with a high-end “M2 Extreme” chip featuring 48 CPU cores and 152 GPU cores. That’s according to Mark Gurman in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter. Gurman also says the new Mac Pro will be manufactured in Vietnam, a stark departure from the “Made in USA” 2019 Intel Mac Pro.

The “Extreme” chip would have essentially been a dual M2 Ultra. But complexity and cost concerns seem to have shelved those plans. Gurman still says Apple is preparing to launch a new Mac Pro with an M2 Ultra inside, with a design that enables expandability of some components, like RAM and storage.

But as talks dragged on with the NFL, Apple appeared to balk back at some of the contract’s limitations.

Apple’s original film efforts were validated this year when Apple TV+ became the first streaming service to win the coveted Best Picture Oscar, for ‘CODA‘. That being said, exactly how many people are watching Apple’s films is still murky.

Will Smith Emancipation Apple TV

Apple today released Emancipation, the new Will Smith movie about a slave escaping his captor in 1863. The film is inspired by the true story of the enslaved ‘Whipped Peter’, whose photos in the press helped inform the public just how poorly slaves were being treated, and guide public opinion towards the freedom movement.

Emancipation is streaming today on Apple TV+. Of course, the film is mired in controversy because of its lead actor’s actions at the Oscars earlier this year, in which Will Smith slapped Chris Rock on stage.

Apple removes vocals from iPhone 14 launch ad after lyrics were confused for racial slur

Update: Weirdly, the YouTube video has now reverted back to the original ad, vocals intact.

Apple has updated the videos on social media, including YouTube, for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus launch ad. The original ads used a snippet of the song Biggest by Idris Elba, with lyrics repeating the word ‘Biggest’.

However, the way the way the word was said in the song meant some people instead heard an offensive racial slur. It became somewhat of a viral meme almost immediately after the ad came out in September. Two months on, though, Apple has responded by removing the vocals from the ad’s soundtrack entirely.
