iOS 14 will let you change your default email and web browser apps

As part of iOS 14’s new features, users will be able to switch their default app preferences for the first time. Details are scarce currently, but one of the slides in the WWDC presentation featured a block that announced users will be able to change their default browser and default email app. This is a long-requested feature, as iOS 13 and prior versions of the operating system will always direct taps on links to Safari, and new emails start in Apple Mail.

We’ll bring more information on these changes soon.

Apple announces iPadOS 14: new widgets, redesigned apps, handwriting recognition, revamped universal search

Apple announces iPadOS 14, building on the already announced iOS 14 features like home screen widgets. Apple is expanding stock apps with unique iPad design elements like sidebars in Photos and Music. Interfaces like Siri and incoming phone calls are now modal experiences rather than full screen overlays.

There is also a new search experience, system-wide handwriting recognition, and other changes designed to make the iPad experience work better with Apple Pencil and the Magic Keyboard.

Apple approves Hey email app update as company adds time-limited free accounts

Apple has approved an update to the Hey email app, following a week of controversy over Apple’s decision to reject the app because it did not adopt in-app purchases. In a letter last week, Apple SVP Phil Schiller suggested Hey could offer In-App Purchases as an option or add some basic functionality accessible to all users, with the login paywall unlocking the full app.

In response, Hey has now added a free tier and submitted that version to Apple. With the 1.0.3 update, users would be able to try Hey for 14 days using a temporary email address. These ‘burner’ accounts reset every two weeks. Hey wants people to get attached to the app and then sign up to the $99/year subscription in order to secure a permanent email address. We now have to wait for Apple to approve the update to truly conclude the situation.

Kuo: Apple to launch AirPods 3 in first half of 2021, with similar design to AirPods Pro

Yesterday, Kuo released his roadmap for Apple’s ARM Mac transition, which is set to be officially announced in just a few hours. And today, the TF Securities analyst continues his reporting with an update on AirPods.

Kuo believes that Apple will continue to sell second-generation AirPods through this year’s holiday season. The company will replace them with AirPods 3 in the first half of 2021. Kuo describes the AirPods 3 as featuring a new form factor design “similar to AirPods Pro”.

Last minute WWDC rumors: macOS Big Sur, iOS 14 home screen redesign, HomeKit focus for tvOS 14, no hardware today

With Apple’s big WWDC keynote event kicking off at 10 AM Pacific, this past weekend has seen a flurry of semi-questionable rumors surface. The most interesting of these ‘leaks’ originate from this Weibo page which has proved reliable in the past (which @l0vetodream posted in English).

The Weibo poster claims that the next version of macOS will be called Big Sur, which will feature system UI redesigns and a big update for Safari. iOS 14 will reportedly shake up the home screen with the addition of widgets and changes to the app grid (9to5Mac first reported that iOS 14 would feature a new app list view in March). The account also says that the phone call UI in iOS 14 will no longer be forced to be a full-screen takeover, so hopefully a banner alert style is finally added as an option for users …

Kuo confirms ARM at WWDC: 13.3-inch MacBook Pro and new 24-inch iMac will be the first ARM Macs, released as soon as Q4

Following a report from Bloomberg that said Apple would announce the transition to ARM Macs at WWDC tomorrow, respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is reporting his latest predictions for the ARM Mac lineup. Kuo believes that Apple will announce the first ARM processor at WWDC and that the first Mac models to feature ARM CPUs will be a next-generation 13.3-inch MacBook Pro and a new redesigned iMac.

Kuo confirms that an all-new design iMac is launching imminently, and it will apparently be Apple’s last new Mac featuring an Intel CPU. Starting in Q4 2020 / Q1 2021, Apple will begin its ARM transition with the release of the 13.3-inch MacBook Pro running on Apple silicon, according to Kuo. The updated iMac — featuring a 24-inch display with thinner bezels — is scheduled to switch to ARM at a similar time.

Viral social media post about ‘phone disruptions’ spreads false information about iPhone COVID-19 tracking

A social media post is going viral this week, relating to the new Exposure Notification API and as it relates to COVID-19 contact tracing on iPhone. Whilst the origin of the text is unclear, the story is being shared widely across social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp and beyond. Unfortunately, the content of the message is little more than fear mongering.

Bloomberg details Apple’s dual device strategy for augmented reality, starting with a gaming-focused headset in 2022

There has been a lot of smoke about Apple’s augmented reality hardware ambitions, with conflicting reports about Apple’s work on an AR headset for games, and a sleeker AR glasses product. Today, Mark Gurman at Bloomberg released a comprehensive rundown on the dual device strategy, which will start with a headset scheduled for 2022 release. The headset will roughly resemble an Oculus Quest, but be much more technically advanced.

The report also details how the headset was originally intended to work in concert with a hub, which would enable higher performance and graphical fidelity. However, Jony Ive ‘balked’ at the idea of selling a portable device that required a stationary add-on, and the product’s direction was eventually changed to be a less-powerful but independent device.

UK changes course on contact tracing app, will use Apple’s exposure notification API after all

The UK government today scrapped plans for a centralized contact tracing app and instead will announce that it is switching to use the API solution provided by Apple and Google, as reported by the BBC. The Exposure Notification API preserves user privacy and offers better battery life and performance on Apple’s iPhone.

The news follows multiple delays about when the UK would actually launch its contact tracing app, which was originally billed to launch in May.

Another analyst believes Apple will not include EarPods with iPhone 12

EarPods

In May, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo raised the idea that Apple is not planning to include its wired EarPod earbuds in the iPhone 12 box, as it has done with all previous iPhone models.

Now, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives is also saying that he is hearing the same: “our checks that likely no wired EarPods will come in the iPhone 12 box/packaging”. Ultimately, this will help Apple drive sales of its wireless AirPods earbuds ever higher.

European Commission announces probes into App Store In-App Purchase rules and Apple Pay

Default iOS apps

Update: Apple responded to the announcement with a short statement: “It’s disappointing the European Commission is advancing baseless complaints from a handful of companies who simply want a free ride, and don’t want to play by the same rules as everyone else”.

Apple is now formally facing investigations on its conduct regarding the App Store and Apple Pay. European competition commissioner Margrethe Vestager today said that the probes are a priority and revolve around Apple’s role as gatekeeper.

The Apple Pay investigation will look into whether Apple unfairly locked out competing contactless payment services by restricting the use of the NFC chip inside iPhones. The App Store investigation centers on the mandatory use of Apple In-App Purchase system for third-party apps, and the 30% revenue cut that implies.

Apple’s App Store faces another anticompetitive complaint over the 30% revenue cut

Apple is facing another anticompetitive complaint, this time filed by Rakuten who owns the Kobo ebook brand. The Financial Times reports that Kobo is filing a formal complaint that it cannot fairly compete against Apple Books in the App Store while it is subjected to sharing 30% of revenue from purchases made in the Kobo app.

Kobo is currently forced to sell all of its content through its website to avoid paying Apple 30% of revenues. This means customers cannot conveniently buy books inside of the app itself.

Upcoming iPhone CarKey feature described in iOS 13.6 privacy screens

We have been reporting on Apple’s upcoming ‘CarKey’ feature for a while now, and the latest iOS 13.6 beta gives us our best confirmation yet that the feature is imminent. On iOS 13.6, if you go to the Privacy information for Apple Wallet, Apple details several paragraphs about adding a car key to the Wallet app — a feature that the company has not yet officially announced. The find was first spotted by iPhone Ticker.

As the copy has been updated in 13.6 but not in prior releases, it suggests that Apple may be planning to launch Car Key with the release of iOS 13.6, rather than waiting for iOS 14. The company may very well announce Car Key as part of WWDC next week.

Eurasian regulatory filings list upcoming iPhone 12 models and likely redesigned iMac

iPhone sales grow

Apple’s latest updates to the Eurasian Economic Commission database have hit today, with a handful of new model identifiers to theorize about. After a leaker indicated that a new iMac model was coming at WWDC, the EEC database now lists a new desktop Mac with model identifier ‘A2330’, running macOS 10.15. This is adding more fuel on the fire that a new generation iMac is just around the corner, expected to end a decade-long run of the current iMac’s industrial design.

There are also EEC listings for the expected iPhone 12 lineup, nine new model identifiers in total …

Rumor: Redesigned iMac to be announced at WWDC with thin bezels, AMD Navi GPUs and T2 chip

imac-pro-compatible-pro-display-xdr

Apple may be about to refresh the iMac’s external design after more than eight years. According to leaker Sonny Dickson, a new iMac is set to arrive later this month as part of Apple’s WWDC announcements.

The new iMac would feature slim bezels, resembling the Apple Pro Display XDR in appearance. It would also abandon spinning hard drives in favor of an all-SSD lineup, driven by the Apple T2 chip for the first time in an iMac.

Bloomberg: Apple to announce its first ARM Mac chips at WWDC, as it starts transition away from Intel

Apple is reportedly going to announce its transition from Intel to ARM chips for its line of Macs at WWDC, according to Bloomberg. The event kicks off on June 22nd (hosted virtually this year), and is the usual venue where Apple announces its big platform shifts. This year, we are expecting the unveiling of iOS 14, macOS 10.16, watchOS 7 and more.

Apple has had great success using custom A-series silicon for its iPhones and iPads, with its iOS devices offering market-leading performance. It is now looking to achieve a similar feat with its laptops and — later — desktop Macs. Bloomberg says Apple plans to announce the transition this month, which will give time for Mac developers to get their apps ready when the first Apple ARM Mac ships in 2021.

Apple to add 0% interest Apple Card payment plans for iPad, Mac, AirPods and more

Apple Card 5% back

Apple is readying to launch new Apple Card monthly payment plans, similar to what it introduced at the end of 2019 for iPhone. On the last quarterly earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook teased that the program would expand to other products soon.

According to Bloomberg, the new financing will let customers buy products including iPad, Mac, Apple Pencil, Pro Display XDR on their Apple Card in monthly instalments, over 12 months at 0% interest. Apple will offer six-months interest free plans for cheaper products like Apple TV, AirPods and HomePod. This is less than the 24 months free financing the Apple Card offers for iPhone purchases.
