In macOS Sonoma, Safari gains a new feature called “Add to Dock.” I was way too excited about this feature when it was announced because I know how transformational it can be for macOS deployments in the enterprise (with some help from Apple). Web apps reign supreme for many enterprise tools, and “Add to Dock” is going to make it a lot better.

HomeKit Weekly: Onvis Smart Button remote makes HomeKit products easy to use for guests and children

Onvis Smart button

Back in the summer, my family went out of town for a few days. We had a dog sitter come by a few times a day to take our dogs on walks as well as take them to the bathroom. One challenge I had was showing her how to use our smart home. For our Level Lock+, I found it easier just to give her a key because there is no easy way to share a Home Key with someone outside of your iCloud family account. While I can share access to our lights, I find it much easier to use a product like the Onvis Smart Button instead.

Spike adds AI functionality for composing emails, summarizing PDFs, taking notes, and more

Spike AI

2023 has been the year of AI usage and AI tools after the launch of ChatGPT in late 2022. While there are a lot of dedicated AI tools launching across the internet, I believe that the future of AI is being built into your existing tools as a feature. Spike has just launched its new “Magic AI” functionality into its email app that works with its own Spike for Teams email service as well as when you add your iCloud, Gmail, Outlook, etc. to the app.

HomeKit Weekly: New Onvis Smart Plug checks all the boxes with Matter and Thread

Onvis Smart Plug

There are two things I want to see in every new smart home product: Matter and Thread. Matter lets me know that I’ll have access to the product regardless of which platform I use in the future. Thread lets me know that it’s going to work extremely well in my home in terms of responsiveness. The new Onvis Smart Plug checks all those boxes, and it’s quickly become one of my favorite smart plugs.

For Apple IT admins who manage thousands of remote Macs, providing support for end users is not always easy. There can be a lot of variables that you must uncover when issues arise. One of the things I’ve often thought Apple should add is a simple menu bar app that can quickly allow users to copy and paste key data into a support ticket. Thankfully, one company is continuing to provide a solution: Root3’s Support App and version 2.5 recently shipped.

HomeKit Weekly: AiDot OREiN emerges as a Matter-focused light bulb vendor for a vendor-neutral smart home

OREiN bulbs

I know some of you aren’t bullish on Matter. Is it perfect? No. Does it need more features to truly become the vendor-neutral smart home specification? Yes. I believe in it, though. I believe in it because every manufacturer wins with Matter. When customers know that your products can work across every platform, like Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant, they’re more likely to buy your products. I recently picked up the OREiN light bulbs from AiDot to put its Matter certification through the paces to see how easy it is.

HomeKit Weekly: Sylvania delivers a HomeKit smart plug at the lowest cost possible

Sylvania Smart Bluetooth Outlet

Inflation is certainly affecting everyone. It’s laughable what some things have increased in price in the past few years. I’ve been testing a HomeKit plug that, thankfully, is somehow the lowest-cost plug I’ve seen on the market. The Sylvania Smart Bluetooth Outlet adaptor is the only plug I’ve seen at this price in all my years of covering smart home technology.

Apple @ Work: Cellular-enabled Macs would be an incredible enterprise tool

Cellular-enabled Macs have been on tech professionals’ wish lists for as long as cellular speeds have been fast enough to actually be useful for data. Apple sells cellular-enabled iPads and cellular-enabled Apple Watches, and of course all iPhones include cellular data, so why not the Mac? Today, I want to make the case that Apple should offer an option to include a built-in cellular modem in MacBook Pro laptops as a way to differentiate them on the high end of the lineup.

Mosyle releases beta access to Apple Watch device management

Apple Watch Mosyle

One of the new features coming to watchOS 10 this fall that should be exciting for IT professionals is the ability to add the Apple Watch to a device management system. One might wonder: Isn’t the Apple Watch a consumer device? It is, but there are plenty of reasons a company might deploy Apple Watches. It could be because of the noise detection for employees working in a warehouse or for doctors wearing them for communication around a hospital. Today, Mosyle is releasing a beta version of its device management system that allows for the onboarding of Apple Watches.

Apple makes a lot of tools for IT teams when it comes to managing iPads, iPhones, and Macs. Apple Configurator is a fantastic tool that acts as a Swiss army knife of sorts when it comes to doing tasks locally on iPhones and iPads when paired with a Mac. That doesn’t mean there isn’t room for innovation, though. I recently came across a tool that could be incredibly useful in the right circumstances: Telepod.

HomeKit Weekly: Umbrel Home becomes a must-have box for smart home fans looking to own more of their data

Umbrel Home

I’ve been using Umbrel at home for the last year and a half. Previously, I used a Raspberry Pi 4 to power my Umbrel server, but I recently upgraded to the new Umbrel Home, which includes everything prebuilt and ready to go. 2023 has been the year when I’ve really been thinking hard about where my data is, which companies have access to it, and how I can better control my costs. After spending a few weeks with Umbrel Home, I completely recommend it as a streamlined smart home hub for Homebridge while also allowing you to build your own personal cloud.
