Apple has been building toward Declarative Device Management for a few years, but at WWDC 2025 earlier this summer, it became clear that the transition is over. DDM is not a future concept or an option for Apple fleets. It is now how Apple expects organizations to manage updates, apps, and policies across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, and Vision Pro. This is a technical and mental change and a vendor litmus test for IT teams. If your device management provider is not fully committed to DDM, Apple just gave you a reason to start planning your transition and the tools to do so.

Apple @ Work: How EasyLAPS secures local admin accounts on macOS

Apple @ Work is exclusively brought to you by Mosyle, the only Apple Unified Platform. Apple IT teams have long struggled with the balance between local admins accounts on macOS and static or shared passwords across multiple devices. On one hand, these accounts are generally needed for updates, troubleshooting, and device recovery, but on the other, a static or shared password across multiple devices is a security problem waiting to happen. If someone leaves, you really should update them, but I suspect this often doesn’t happen. EasyLAPS aims to solve that problem by automatically rotating and securely storing each Mac’s local admin password in your device management system (more on how later). It’s a set-it-and-forget-it approach that removes one of enterprise Mac deployments’ most common weak points.

HomeKit Weekly: ULTRALOQ’s new Bolt NFC is built for Apple Home Key

ULTRALOQ Bolt NFC

Home Key has been one of my favorite HomeKit features since it launched a few years ago. You never have to dig for keys; you can still get in when your phone battery is dead, and in my experience, it works instantly every time. There is no app to launch or waiting for a Bluetooth connection. The new ULTRALOQ Bolt NFC brings all of that convenience to more homes at a very reasonable price point.

Apple @ Work: SAP updates Privileges with new tools for managing admin rights on macOS

For many Mac admins, the ideal balance between security and productivity comes down to how you handle local admin rights on your fleet. Too much access creates risk. Too little access creates daily annoyance. Apple has done a great job of making it so you can operate as a Standard User day to day, but there are times when local admin rights are needed. SAP’s Privileges app has been a popular way to thread that needle by letting users elevate themselves to admin status when needed, and then return to a standard user when they are done. It gives IT teams more control while giving end users the ability to solve their own problems without waiting for a help desk ticket to be approved.

With the release of Privileges 2.4, SAP is adding new tools that make it even more flexible and reliable in enterprise environments.

Level Lock Pro is now shipping with Apple home key, Matter support, and more

Level Lock Pro

Since Apple introduced home key, it has quickly become one of the most important features for smart locks. Basic HomeKit support just doesn’t cut it anymore. Unlocking your front door with just a tap from an iPhone or Apple Watch feels magical, and once you’ve experienced it, it’s hard to imagine going back to keys or even an app. Level was one of the first companies to embrace home key, and now it’s back with its most advanced product yet: the Level Lock Pro. It’s the smallest smart lock you can buy, it disappears into your door (doesn’t look like a smart lock at all), and it has Matter over Thread built in.

As someone who had the only Mac in the company I worked for 20 years ago, it’s been a fun journey to see Apple grow so much in the enterprise, particularly the Mac. Macs have quietly become the go-to device for a lot of modern knowledge work, and with that comes a growing reality as AI functionality becomes baked into everything. AI tools are everywhere. Some are built into apps employees already use. Others show up through the browser or get installed without any oversight. Frankly, AI usage is the biggest examples of Shadow IT I’ve ever seen. Most of these tools are completely invisible to IT.

HomeKit Weekly: This Aqara kit is the HomeKit starter pack I wish I had years ago

Aqara Camera Protect Kit

When people ask me where to start with HomeKit, I usually give them a list of products that work well together that are easy to set up: a motion sensor, a door sensor, and maybe a camera if you want one. Aqara has made that question a lot easier to answer with its new Aqara Camera Protect Kit. It’s a true HomeKit starter kit in a box. You get a 2K camera that doubles as a Matter hub, plus three devices that cover most use cases right out of the gate.

MagSafe Monday: LISEN launches new 10,000mAh CardMag battery pack that charges your iPhone, Apple Watch, and more without the bulk

LISEN CardMag

I spent some time traveling in late July and put the LISEN CardMag MagSafe battery pack (affiliate link) through a tough test with heavy usage, high temps, and everything in between. I was in the northeast and on the go constantly. I’m also running the iOS 26 beta, so my iPhone battery isn’t exactly thriving right now. I had Apple Maps going constantly as we navigated cities, used the subway, and more.

Time Machine still works great. It’s one of those Apple features that quietly does its job, but it also feels like something from another era in terms of technology. It was built for a time when people backed up to a local drive under their desk or a shared volume down the hall at the office. That’s not how modern businesses work anymore. If Apple wanted to support the enterprise, Managed Apple Accounts would come with built-in cloud backup. That doesn’t exist. Apple hasn’t built it. So, companies like Backblaze are stepping in to solve the problem that Apple won’t.

HomeKit Weekly: Is the Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni the best robot vacuum for HomeKit?

iOS 18.4 finally brought robot vacuum support to HomeKit, opening the door for a new wave of Matter-enabled vacuums that work with your existing smart home environment. I’ve been testing the Ecovacs Deebot X8 Pro Omni for the past few months (even before iOS 18.4) to see how well it fits into a smart home, but more importantly, whether it’s worth the money as a way to keep your floors cleaned.

Migrating between Device Management Services (DMS) usually involved full device wipes, custom scripts, and hoping everything re-enrolled properly. Some vendors leaned into that pain. They’d offer bargain pricing in year one, then quietly ratchet it up over time. Because what were IT teams going to do? Switching DMS (previously MDM) vendors meant hours of manual work or rebuilding devices from scratch, and employees really wouldn’t see much difference.
