Apple has just published a list of App Store improvements that will begin to go into effect next Wednesday, September 7th. The changes seek to remove broken and forgotten apps from the App Store, apps that are currently breaking App Store review guidelines, and that are just no longer functional.

Not one to shy away from the spotlight, Kanye West has announced that this weekend he’ll be opening up 21 pop shops around the world, some of which will be exclusively accepting Apple Pay thanks to a partnership with Square. Square’s contactless readers will be available in the U.S., Canada, and Australia so that customers can focus on paying for their items as quickly as possible. West claimed that the last pop-up shop had generated $2 million in sales in New York City alone, so a high revenue weekend like this could be great exposure for Square’s technology.
Black Hat, famously known for its information security conferences, has just released the ‘Behind the Scenes of iOS Security’ video from this year’s USA event. The talk, led by Ivan Krstic, dives into some of the security methods that currently exist in iOS and what Apple does to keep users secure. This talk was also where Apple had introduced its first security bounty program.
Consumers downloading apps from the App Store have to rely on Apple’s approval process for vetting insecure applications, and even then there isn’t a guarantee that Apple hasn’t missed something crucial. Just last year hundreds of apps in the App Store had been found to be using private APIs to collect private user data, a violation of the App Review Guidelines. The recently launched public beta test of Will Strafach’s Verify.ly service looks to provide a “warning label for apps” to everyday consumers.

Apple has successfully acquired Turi, a machine learning company based out of Seattle. According to sources in discussion with GeekWire, Turi’s team will be able to remain in the Seattle region as Apple builds out the technologies further. Turi’s original product, GraphLab, was developed as an open source project for machine learning tasks, but eventually moved into data-mining tasks as it out-performed competitors.
Twitter’s latest iOS update, released today, now includes iPad-compatible keyboard shortcuts. Users with paired Bluetooth keyboards or Smart Keyboards will now be able to use their keyboards to create new tweets, or move between tabs.

Kinsa today has announced the launch of its Elmo Smart Ear Thermometer and companion application. The device announced today is a visual update on their original Smart Ear Thermometer sporting an Elmo themed design instead of the original blue. The Elmo Smart Ear Thermometer takes one-second readings, combines them with acknowledged symptoms from within the app, and then uses that data to create actionable next steps.
Available through the companion app, Sesame Street’s Elmo gives children empathetic words such as “feel better soon” and sympathizes with them when they aren’t feeling well.
In what appears to be a simultaneous move today, both G-Technology and Seagate have announced upgrades to their storage device lineups bringing capacities up to 10TB each. Seagate today has introduced a new lineup of hard drives titled the Guardian Series, while G-Technology has decided to move towards upgrading their current portfolio’s max capacity.
Withings today has announced the availability of Thermo, the first FDA-cleared wireless temporal thermometer. Available exclusively at Apple Stores and Withings.com, the thermometer hopes to become a mainstay in households where accurate and frequent readings are desired. Using HotSpot Sensor technology, the thermometer takes 4,000 accurate measurements in just two seconds detecting the hottest point and then giving a highly accurate temperature reading.

At this year’s WWDC 2016, Apple introduced the only feature I really cared about seeing making its move onto macOS: Siri. The voice assistant had finally found its way onto the next obvious platform. While I was excited to see it available, I wasn’t ecstatic to see it would take a keyboard shortcut or icon click to launch it. That requirement made it feel like a step back in a world where nearly all of Apple’s devices had begun moving to hands-free Siri activation. Just a few hours after having received its promised security-focused update, Pokémon Go is once again under scrutiny by security and privacy advocates. Senator Al Franken of Minnesota has issued a statement asking for clarification from Niantic, the creators of the quickly growing mobile game, on how user data is being used within the application and its services.
Although one of the most glaring issues was fixed in an update issued earlier today, this statement comes with a longer and more detailed list on clarification of how the data is being used. Senator Franken poses the idea that many children will be playing this game and that their data is currently being considered a “business asset” under Niantic’s own Privacy Policy.

Pokémon GO has just received an update on iOS that will hopefully address some of the biggest complaints it has received in the past week. Today’s update puts a focus on improving the account process for users including fixing the Google full account access scope issue. Users should also no longer have to re-enter their credentials after they’ve been forcefully logged out, and the some issues with crashes should be resolved as well. Apple today has drastically simplified the iPhone trade-in program that allows eligible smartphones to be traded in for credit towards the purchase of a future device. Today’s changes allow customers to use the trade-in credit to help lower the cost of the a new iPhone purchase or to reduce monthly payments made to a carrier.
Reports are coming in that a list of App Store and iTunes services are currently down for users. Those affected are prevented from logging into their accounts, downloading and updating apps, or streaming previously purchased content. Apple’s system status as of 05:33 PM EST doesn’t list any services as being out, but tweets directed at Apple’s official support account seem to indicate otherwise.
