While it’s often credit card and other financial companies buying the location data for fraud detection and more, Motherboard says some rogue third-parties have access to user location data and it’s landing the hands of bounty hunters and the black market.

Here we go again… another generation of cellular technologies and another way to confuse customers in the U.S. In the latest release of iOS 12.2, Apple joined many other Android manufacturers in adding the “5G E” logo for AT&T customers.

Similar to the transition to 4G LTE, where AT&T and T-Mobile misled its customers by adding a 4G logo on the iPhone, despite only being HSPA+ and not LTE, AT&T is now back at it again, labeling LTE-A as “5G E”.

T-Mobile beats out Verizon as top ‘quality’ brand as it sees 9% YoY increase in customer satisfaction

A new US wireless carrier customer study has been released today and T-Mobile has continued its streak of winning top honors over Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint with solid year-over-year customer satisfaction growth. More notably however, is that T-Mobile has beat out Verizon in the survey’s “quality brand” ranking.

Update: AT&T now says it will also stop selling user location to aggregation services, according to CNET.

After Motherboard published details about a concerning investigation into how US wireless carriers are selling user location data to third-parties, T-Mobile and Sprint have made some fresh promises. They say they will end the practice of selling users’ data to third-party aggregators that often have little to no oversight.

Report: Apple’s complaints about AT&T and Verizon may have led to DOJ eSIM investigation [U]

UPDATE: An AT&T spokesperson gave us the following statement:

We are aware of the investigation into GSMA’s process for developing eSIM standards that provide a better experience for consumers. Along with other GSMA members, we have provided information to the government in response to their requests and will continue to work proactively within GSMA, including with those who might disagree with the proposed standards, to move this issue forward.

News has broke this afternoon that the US Department of Justice has opened an investigation over antitrust concerns and potential collusion between Verizon and AT&T in efforts to prevent eSIM adoption and progress. Apple Watch and iPad both use eSIM technology and Apple is reportedly one of multiple manufacturers who has raised concerns with the DOJ.

Major US carriers working together on next-gen ‘mobile authentication platform’ to replace weak SMS system
