Apple first announced CarPlay in 2013 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) under the name “iOS in the Car.” The initial release supported basic functions like calls, messages, maps, and music. The $120k+ Ferrari FF was the first car to feature the new technology. It wasn’t until March 2014, with the release of iOS 7.1, that Apple rebranded the product to CarPlay. And the rest is history.

Honda Civic Type R finally coming to U.S. – with CarPlay support as standard

The Honda Civic Type R has long been one of the most iconic ‘hot hatches,’ offering sportcar performance in a body based on the company’s 5-door hatchback. It’s never before been on sale in the USA, but the company has announced that all that is changing with the 2017 model, which will be available from this spring.

The long-awaited Civic Type R, slated to go on sale in the U.S. in late spring with an MSRP in the mid-$30k range, is the first ever Type R-badged Honda to be sold on American soil.

“The fastest, most powerful Honda ever sold in America,” said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president & general manager of the Honda Division, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “We’re happy to inform our U.S. enthusiasts that the long wait for the forbidden fruit of Honda Type R performance is nearly over!”

Ford unveils all-new 2018 Expedition as latest vehicle with Apple’s CarPlay, wireless charging pad & Wi-Fi hotspot

The all-new Ford Expedition offers more than 40 new features and driver-assist technologies, including a Wi-Fi hotspot that supports as many as 10 devices at once, SYNC® 3, and power for passengers in every row, with four 12-volt power points, six USB chargers and a 110-volt power outlet.

Dodge shows off new 2018 Durango SRT as latest with Apple’s CarPlay, BeatsAudio

Dodge today announced its 2018 Dodge Durango SRT at the Chicago Auto Show as its latest vehicle to come with Apple’s CarPlay platform stock.

The three-row, 475-horsepower SUV sports a 8.4-inch touchscreen that utilizes Unconnect software to interface with CarPlay (and Android Auto) and a nine speaker BeatsAudio sound system. It also comes with a 5-year trial of SiriusXM Travel Link and Traffic.

Subaru’s 2018 Legacy unveiled at Chicago Auto Show is company’s latest w/ Apple’s CarPlay

The Chicago Auto Show is kicking off today and the first CarPlay announcement comes from Subaru with an unveiling of the new 2018 Legacy model as one of its first to support the platform.

Apple’s CarPlay platform, which allows users to access iOS-like features through a vehicle’s in-dash system using a connected iPhone, will be available standard in the 2018 Legacy (as will Android Auto) via the company’s Bluetooth SUBARU STARLINK Multimedia system.

Ford, Toyota, and more form alliance to prevent Apple and Google from taking over the in-car experience

report from Bloomberg today takes note that Ford and Toyota have joined forces with four other automakers and some electronics suppliers to form the SmartDeviceLink Consortium. The alliance has shared its main goal of creating more choice for connecting smartphones with vehicles, which in turn could create some friction with Apple, Google, and their visions for integrating and controlling the user interface inside of cars.

Facebook’s Messenger app now supports CallKit on iOS 10, brings VoIP calling to CarPlay

iOS 10 lets third-party developers use the standard call look and feel from the Phone app in their own apps with something known as CallKit, and Facebook’s latest update to Messenger is already taking advantage of it. Messenger for iOS has let you make calls over the Internet to your friends for a while, and now incoming calls to Messenger will behave just like standard phone calls. This improved behavior even extends to CarPlay.

BMW now includes a $300 CarPlay option on almost all its vehicles in US

CarPlay has been a long time coming to BMW, but it now looks like the system is available as a $300 option across almost all models.

We saw back in May that it was on the way to the X5 and X6 M, and a month later the same option appeared for the M3 and M4, suggesting that BMW might have been reserving it for higher-end models. As of today, though, ‘Apple CarPlay Compatibility’ appears as an entertainment option across most of the range …
