Foxconn

Apple previously warned that it wouldn’t meet its March quarter guidance and now one of its primary manufacturing partners, Foxconn has shared an update today on how coronavirus has affected its business. It shows how big of an impact the virus has had when comparing last month’s revenue to January as well as the same period last year.

Key iPhone assembler Foxconn expects to be running at full capacity in China by end of March

Foxconn's biggest iPhone plants

As the impacts of the coronavirus on businesses remain unclear, Foxconn is trying to appease its partners by announcing today that it expects to resume normal production at full capacity in China by the end of March.

Foxconn remains Apple’s primary producer of high-end flagship iPhone models. Whilst parts come in from all over the world, final assembly of Apple’s most expensive iPhones happens in Foxconn factories, so it’s good news for Apple that Foxconn thinks it can be back up and running sooner rather than later.

iPhone production woes pale as coronavirus declared humanity’s greatest threat

Coronavirus declared humanity's greatest threat

The World Health Organization has put concerns over iPhone production into context by declaring that the coronavirus is now humanity’s greatest threat.

Initially thought to be less deadly than the SARS outbreak which killed 774 people across 2002 and 2003, the WHO now says that the death toll from the coronavirus is already well in excess of this

Apple supplier Foxconn profits rise as Japan Display hits five years of losses

Foxconn profits rise despite all in iPhone revenue

Two Apple suppliers yesterday delivered their earnings reports, with rather different outcomes. The reports saw Foxconn profits rise significantly while Japan Display hit five straight years of losses.

While Foxconn’s fortunes are strongly tied to those of Apple, its strong Q3 performance may be despite, rather than because of, the Cupertino company …

Comment: I can see only an expensive solution to Apple/Foxconn’s legal problem

Foxconn’s legal problem, reported this morning, is also Apple’s problem.

Apple has long worked hard to ensure suppliers like Foxconn comply with labor regulations, conducting regular audits to ensure underage workers are not employed, and enforcing Apple’s own rules on things like maximum overtime hours.

However, there is one breach of China’s employment laws that would seem almost impossible for either Foxconn or Apple to resolve, at least in the short term…

All US iPhones can be made outside China to escape trade war, says Foxconn

All US iPhones could be made outside China, says Foxconn

With US iPhones currently made in China, there has been much concern about the escalating trade war between the two countries. The worst-case scenario would be a 25% tariff on iPhones entering the US, which would either push up prices, hurt Apple’s bottom line, or both.

But Foxconn has said that the iPhone would be able to escape this fate, as the assembler has enough capacity in other countries to supply all US iPhones …

Foxconn is seeking to renegotiate Wisconsin deal, despite earlier assurances

Foxconn has so far renamed an empty office building in Wisconsin

A letter from Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers reveals that Foxconn is indeed seeking to renegotiate the scale of its investment, which was originally supposed to generate 13,000 jobs in the state. The company has so far renamed an office building which currently appears empty.

Foxconn had previously said that it remained committed to the contract despite Gov. Evans stating that ‘the deal is no longer in play‘ …
