A giant step for iPhone. A monumental leap for iPad.

Apple unveiled iOS 11 in June of 2017 during its Worldwide Developer Conference, releasing the first developer beta the same day.

iOS 11 includes a host of new features and interface changes, including a new file system with the Files app, a new Dock for iPad, a redesigned Control Center, drag and drop, ARKit – an augmented reality platform, Apple Pay in Messages, a redesigned App Store, improved Siri, and much more.

Here’s how Apple describes its latest mobile OS:

iOS 11 sets a new standard for what is already the world’s most advanced mobile operating system. It makes iPhone better than before. It makes iPad more capable than ever. And now it opens up both to amazing possibilities for augmented reality in games and apps. With iOS 11, iPhone and iPad are the most powerful, personal, and intelligent devices they’ve ever been.

iOS 11 is currently in developer beta and public beta. The operating system will likely launch to the general public alongside the iPhone 8 this fall.

A new rumor over the weekend claimed Apple TV is gaining a new multi-user feature with tvOS 11 later this year. Account switching makes a lot of sense for a shared device like the Apple TV, but users have wanted this feature on iOS for a while too. Would Apple ship account switching with tvOS and exclude the feature from iOS?

Apple announces WWDC 2017: June 5th – 9th, held at San Jose McEnery Convention Center

Apple has announced it is holding WWDC 2017 from June 5th to June 9th, with a big change from previous years: the conference will be held in San Jose, at the McEnery Convention Center.

At WWDC, Apple unveils the next major versions of its software operating systems. This year, expect the announcement of including iOS 11, macOS 10.13 as well as updates to tvOS and watchOS.

The 2017 conference marks a big shift in location — Apple typically holds WWDC in San Francisco — but it seems the logistics of the conference will otherwise be the same. Registration for tickets will start on March 27.

Sketchy rumor claims iOS 11 will bring long overdue group FaceTime calling

iOS 11 may finally deliver a highly requested FaceTime feature, according to a new rumor. The Verifier which is a technology blog out of Israel claims Apple is planning to include group video calling for FaceTime starting with iOS 11 later this year.

The report cites “several people familiar with [the] iOS development process (partly developed in Israel)” although the rumor has not been verified or floated elsewhere. The site claims Apple will update Messages on iOS to let users start a group FaceTime call with up to five members at a time.

With every year comes a new version of iOS and this year will likely be no different. In 2017, we should expect iOS 11 to be previewed over the summer with subsequent developer and public betas and a release to the public in the fall. It’s also likely that we’ll see a less significant iOS release during the spring with iOS 10.3.

Apple working on its own Snapchat-style video-sharing app & other social features for 2017

Bloomberg reports that Apple is to go head-to-head with Snapchat and Instagram by developing its own video-sharing app as part of a push to target younger users. The company is said to said to be motivated by the fact that social apps generate the greatest level of engagement on the iPhone, Facebook users averaging 50 minutes a day, Snapchat users 30 minutes.

The goal behind the project’s development is to offer simple video editing with tools that appeal to the generation of users growing up with Snapchat and Instagram, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans are private […]

Apple’s current plan calls for its project to become a stand-alone app, presumably as a download via the App Store, but the company may decide to package the functionality into the iPhone’s existing camera application, the people said.

The focus will be on short, fun videos that are super-quick to create …
