Gurman: iOS 18 to include redesigned UI elements, macOS ‘revamp’ to follow later

In today’s edition of Bloomberg’s Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman reports that Apple is working on redesigning iOS and macOS.

It sounds less drastic than the visual changes seen in the iOS 6 to iOS 7 transition, though. He writes “the company is indeed working to update the design of iOS as early as this year, but I don’t believe it will be a total overhaul that mirrors visionOS”. While Gurman says we can expect to see changes in iOS 18 this summer, the work on macOS has only just started and won’t be ready until 2025 or 2026.

iOS 18 is rumored to include a number of new AI features, and Apple is allegedly prepping iPhone 16 hardware upgrades to coincide with this. A new report from the Economic Daily News today suggests that Apple’s next family of processors – the M4 and A18 – will “greatly increase the number of built-in AI computing cores.”

Three features I’d love to see in iOS 18

iOS 17 was only just released in September with some major updates that we love, including customizable contact posters, additional Tapback replies, and voice note improvements. Not only that, but with the recent announcement that RCS messaging is coming to Apple later in 2024, it’s safe to say that iPhone users are going to be seeing some massive updates in iOS 18.
