Apple Sports brings live scores to your iPhone lock screen with iOS 18

Starting with iOS 18, the Apple Sports app will provide Live Activities for games, surfacing real-time and updating sports scores directly on your iPhone lock screen, and Apple Watch Smart Stack.

This functionality will replace the similar “Follow Game” feature currently available in the TV app. Users will be able to choose which teams in Sports they want to receive Live Activities for, and scores will be sent to the user’s lock screen automatically when matches start.

Not every piece of technology or feature needs upgrading over time. Some things work just fine the way they are, and any tweaking or “enhancements” will only make things worse. I would have thought that a TV’s mute button was one such leave-it-alone feature. It’s simple, uncomplicated, and should stay that way. But Apple has changed my mind by introducing a no-brainer upgrade to the mute button in tvOS 18, iOS 18, and more: auto-subtitles.

iOS 18 public beta 5 and more now available ahead of September launch

Apple has just released iOS 18 public beta 5 for iPhone, alongside beta 5 for iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and more. Earlier today, the companion developer betas dropped. These new updates are available for all users who are part of Apple’s public beta program. Existing beta users will see the releases in the Software Update section of Settings.

Mail in iOS 18: Seven new features coming this year

Apple unveiled one of its largest updates to the Mail app back in June. The changes include an all new design, Apple Intelligence enhancements, and a number of other quality of life improvements. Although most of the non-AI features aren’t yet present in the beta, Apple currently says that we should expect everything “later this year.”

When Apple unveiled iOS 18 earlier this summer, I was somewhat disappointed by the lack of significant new security and privacy features. I still feel that way to some extent.
