Apple has announced its long awaited bezel-less, premium 10th anniversary smartphone, iPhone X at its September event. Priced at $999 for the 64GB model and $1,149 for 256GB, iPhone X is Apple’s most expensive iPhone yet.

The iPhone X has a brand-new design and is the first iPhone to feature an OLED display. The iPhone X has a 5.8-inch screen with minimal bezels, giving it a physical size close to the iPhone 8, with a screen size larger than the iPhone 8 Plus.

The iPhone X features glass on the front and back with a stainless steel body that seamlessly meet at the device’s curved edges. Other flagship features include the devices new 3D sensors that bring Face ID as a replacement to Touch ID and wireless charging support.

The iPhone X along with the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus feature the A11 Bionic processor. The all new chip has four efficiency cores that are up to 70% faster than A10 Fusion and two performance cores that are up to 25% faster. The new models also have an Apple designed GPU that offers up to 30% better performance than the A10 chip.

iPhone X will be available for preorder on October 27 and will launch on November 3.

Supply-chain sources say that Apple is in negotiations with Samsung for lower pricing on the OLED screens the Korean company is making for this year’s iPhones.

The request for price reductions comes as no surprise to the industry as the OLED panel accounts for about one-third of the total production cost of an iPhone X and has been pinpointed as a key factor contributing to the lackluster sales of Apple’s first OLED model, said the sources.

Apple’s negotiating position appears to have both strengths and weaknesses at present …

One of the reasons for the $999+ price-tag of the iPhone X is the cost of the Samsung-made OLED screen. The latest estimate is that Samsung charges Apple around $97 per display.

Apple’s negotiating position has been weak, as Samsung has so far been the only company able to make the displays to the iPhone maker’s exacting standards in sufficient volumes. That looked set to change as Apple worked to bring LG on board as a second supplier for this year’s iPhones, but that plan now seems to be in doubt …

FCC appears to leak photos of gold iPhone X

This seems a little too good to be true, but the FCC appears to have published photos of a gold iPhone X. Dated from last September and released earlier in April, these photos show an iPhone X unmistakably in an unreleased gold finish.

The prototype device has rich gold stainless steel frame and a lighter gold glass back, which appears to match the gold shade seen in iPhone 8. More photos below …

With all the signs pointing to the iPhone X not selling as well as Apple and its suppliers had hoped, many wondered whether the $999+ price tag was too high even for iPhone loyalists. One popular line of thought is that as the technology included in the flagship model will, like everything else, fall in price over time, that Apple would use the savings to give customers a slightly more palatable price this year.

A new report from Digitimes citing supply chain sources indicates that Android phone makers are ‘rushing’ to implement fingerprint sensors under the display for upcoming handsets.

Android manufacturers have decided that recreating the 3D facial recognition used by iPhone X is simply too costly to include, and are instead focusing on implementing Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint scanners.

The developers behind the upcoming mobile game for The Walking Dead, Our World, are using the iPhone X’s TrueDepth’s camera system as a motion capture tool for facial expressions for characters in the game. The developers record actors in front of the iPhone X, using a specially-built app to export the facial motion into their 3D character modelling apps.

Going beyond simple cartoon figures like Animoji, the developers feel the iPhone X sensors are good enough that they can use them to animate realistic face rigs of human characters.

The iPhone lineup for 2018 is looking to be composed of three new models, a 6.1-inch LCD iPhone, a successor to the existing 5.8-inch iPhone X and a new high-end 6.5-inch OLED ‘iPhone X Plus’.

Before the iPhone X was officially revealed, there were a lot of rumors and part leaks about a ‘blush gold’ color model (like the header picture in this article). KGI reported that the gold iPhone X was facing production issues and may not be ready for the initial launch. Apple debuted the iPhone X in just Space Gray and Silver. At least according to one rumor, the gold iPhone X may indeed be launching soon.
