Those ‘leaked’ Apple Reality Pro benchmarks are fake and virtually unbelievable

Ahead of Apple’s WWDC 2023 keynote on Monday, the last-minute leaks and rumors are in full swing – and that includes faked ones. With that in mind, you might see a Geekbench result that purports to be from Apple’s Reality Pro headset making the rounds this morning. Just a little bit of research (and common sense), however, quickly shows that it’s faked.

I won’t be buying Reality Pro; a 3rd-gen device, probably

I won't be buying Reality Pro | 9to5Mac render

I won’t be buying Reality Pro. That’s partly down to the anticipated price, but also because I haven’t yet found either augmented or virtual reality to be in any way compelling.

Cute, yes. Impressive, also yes. But I can’t remember the last time I used an AR app, and while I did buy a VR headset, I also can’t remember the last time I dug it out of the back of a drawer …

Mark Zuckerberg randomly unveiled the Meta Quest 3 just days before Apple unveils Reality Pro

Alright, Apple. Pack it up, show’s over. Mark Zuckerberg just dropped a surprise announcement, unveiling the Meta Quest 3 virtual reality headset. The reveal comes just *checks calendar* four days before Apple is set to officially announce its high-end mixed reality headset. So much for Apple’s headset hype, I guess.

Apple mixed reality headset may be its most complex hardware product yet due to curved glass and bent circuitboards

Just because something is hard doesn’t mean it will be great. Apple’s mixed reality headset is, by all accounts, especially difficult to produce, yet Apple believes it has something special. That’s the message from the latest report by The Information, which details just how elaborate and expensive manufacturing the headset has been. The rundown on the state of actually making the headset comes on the near eve of Apple finally unveiling what it’s been working on for years.

Reality Pro demos will likely require a hard-to-get Apple Store appointment

Reality Pro demos | Photo of security guard

Whether or not we expect to buy, I suspect most of us would like to at least try Apple’s upcoming AR/VR headset. But the availability of Reality Pro demos is likely to be limited, even after the product goes on sale toward the end of the year.

It may even be that Apple takes a similar approach to the original gold Apple Watch – where you not only had to make an appointment, but one that took place off the main sales floor …

Meta Quest 3 could signal a slim Reality Pro headset; but also tough competition

Site default logo image

Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman got to try out a prototype of the upcoming Meta Quest 3 mixed-reality headset, and likely the closest competition with Apple’s Reality Pro.

So far, most renders of Reality Pro have shown a rather bulky device, almost as thick as the Quest 2, but the fact that the Meta Quest 3 is notably slimmer could suggest that Apple’s headset may be sleeker than expected …

Apple has been openly building technology for its new mixed reality headset for years

Apple is widely expected to introduce its long rumored mixed reality headset as part of WWDC 2023. This comes as a surprise to few in part because Apple has been singing the praises of augmented reality since at least WWDC 2017. That’s when Apple began laying the groundwork for technology used in the headset through developer tools on the iPhone and iPad.

Poll: Apple’s AR/VR headset is coming – how much are you willing to pay?

Apple’s next big keynote address is fast approaching, and everyone expects to finally see the long-rumored mixed reality headset unveiled. While it’s hard to resist the appeal of a brand new technology category from Apple, the rumored price point could be prohibitive for even the most enthusiastic potential customers. With prices that make even the 1TB iPhone 14 Pro Max look like a value, how high could the price be before you decide you’re out on Apple’s headset?

Reality Pro front display | Close-up photo of an eye

Distinguishing genuine product leaks from hoaxes and misunderstandings can be a tricky business at times, with the track record of the leaker a key clue. But even with a solid record, reports of a Reality Pro front display to show the facial expressions and eye movements of the wearer seems a little… out there.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman seems convinced this is real, repeating it in his latest report based on multiple inside sources, but Apple commenter John Gruber believes it is a misunderstanding of a joke …
