There’s one big problem with the iPhone Fold, and it’s almost the obvious one

There's one big problem with the iPhone Fold (render shown), and it's almost the obvious one

The iPhone Air was arguably the biggest innovation in iPhone design since the iPhone X. The iPhone Fold we’re expecting to see launch next year will be an even bigger shift.

All the signs point to the iPhone Fold being the best foldable smartphone launched to date, but there is one big problem with it – and it’s almost the obvious one …

The two (or three) reasons I may not buy the iPhone Fold

The two (or three) reasons I may not buy the iPhone Fold (render shown)

I’d really like the concept of an iPhone Fold. I love the idea of carrying something that’s an iPhone in my pocket but an iPad mini in use.

We’re of course expecting the device to be very expensive, but I could see it being worth the cost. There are, however, two (or three, depending on how you count them) reasons why it might not be the right phone for me after all …

Next year may see the most fragmented iPhone line-up ever

Next year may see the most fragmented iPhone line-up ever | Abstract image of rounded, colourful rectangles

Once upon a time, there was just a single iPhone. Today, things are rather more complicated, with a choice of four new models plus two older ones remaining on sale directly from Apple.

Next year may see the most fragmented iPhone lineup we have ever seen in the company’s history – and that could be bad news for some of us …

Apple prepares suppliers for an iPhone sales boost next year, fueled by the new foldable model

Apple is apparently preparing its supply chain for an uptick in new iPhone sales next year, according to a new report by Nikkei. The company has apparently targeted sales of about 95 million iPhone 18 models in 2026, noting that the new lineup won’t arrive until the fall.

While the new foldable model will draw interest, Apple is expecting sales to be up across all iPhone 18 models. The company seems to be indicating that it expects a halo effect, where people are enticed into upgrading based on the flashiness of the shiny new folding iPhone, but some will ultimately opt to upgrade to a traditional slab iPhone 18 regardless.

iPhone Fold and iPhone 18 Pro set to get faster mobile data

iPhone Fold and iPhone 18 Pro set to get faster mobile data

Sure, the iPhone 17 lineup hasn’t even shipped yet, but that doesn’t stop the news cycle rolling on. A new report details the chipset we can expect to find inside the iPhone Fold and the iPhone 18 Pro models.

This will of course include the A20 chip, the first to be made using a 2-nanometer process, but the report suggests we can expect mobile data speeds to be faster thanks to a new Apple modem chip …

As we await the iPhone Fold, Samsung and Huawei move onto trifolds

As we await the iPhone Fold, Samsung and Huawei move onto trifolds | Huawei Mate XT shown

It seems clear we’re still a year away from the first iPhone Fold, but the rest of the market isn’t standing still. Samsung is planning to launch its first trifold phone this year, and Huawei is already onto its second-generation model.

On a pedantic note, I would argue that as they have two sets of hinges, they are bifold rather than trifold, but the industry seems to have adopted the latter term, so I guess we’re stuck with it now …

Survey claims many iPhone owners will switch to Android for a foldable this year

2025 folding phones | Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 (left), Pixel Pro Fold 9 (right)

A new survey of US iPhone owners claims that almost a third of them would consider switching to either Samsung or Google in order to get a folding phone this year, rather than waiting until the expected launch of the iPhone Fold next year.

There’s a mix of good and bad news for Apple in the rest of the findings, but the headline claim seems a real stretch …
